It's possible. The Mythbusters tried to replicate their escape and were able to do it. Plus there is some evidence, including from family members of the escapees, that they attempted to make contact after the escape.

If they did escape, how did they manage to remain undetected? Frank Morris might have been as bright as a button, but he was still a thief and not a very clever one at that or else he would not have been caught in the first place. So while they were on the run they would have stole and sooner or later would have been caught.

I'd like to believe so.
In addition to some possible evidence, a case could be made that authorities didn't even want to find them because their survival would encourage more escapes, thus never being caught.

I doubt it. I have been to the island. The water is cold with strong tides. But it is fun to think they did.
I went to UCBerkeley which is on the east side of the bay.
