What do you all think of this upcoming movie? It's basically a gruff Harrison Ford and a CGI motion-captured dog go on an adventure together. Han Solo and Chewbacca this ain't.

I appreciate the idea of the movie, except I don't know why the dog has to be CGI all the time. Fight scenes or other action beats, yeah that makes sense. But publicity shots with Doctor Jones too? Really, Disney?

There's a part of me that wants to check it out, but I can't help thinking that I'm not gonna enjoy a movie about nature and wilderness that will basically be nothing but CGI.

Disney, with 20th Century Studios under its belt, probably thinks "Well if the all-CGI look worked for Lion King 2019......"

Is the dog played by Andy Serkis?

Really, Disney? ...and why is Buck, the iconic sled dog of Jack London's novel, suddenly what appears to be a St. Bernard? This looks horrible.

Indiana Jones in need of a companion pet in his old age is basically what this film is. I think I'll stick with the real thing.

I really wish the dog wasn't CGI.

It looks like a decent adaptation, but then again, I haven't read the book. Harrison looks like he's making a decent effort to do a good performance. My problems are with the obvious use of CGI. The dog is obviously scanned from a real dog and composited alongside with Harrison. It's widely known in the industry that animals are difficult to work with, but with the scale of this movie, it's a no-brainer to use CGI, but it would look more real if they had an actual dog on set for some scenes. Some of the nature backdrops are obvious green screen.

If this was a movie about fantasy/extinct creatures like dragons, dinosaurs, werewolves, it would make sense to use CGI/special effects, but why you do it for animals that not only exist but can be trained to follow instructions? Babe came out decades ago and it's already aged better than this.

In "The Smurfs" movie, the cat was a mixture of CGI and an actual trained cat and it looks way better than this.

Heck from the silent days they had Jean, Strongheart, then the early Rin Tin Tin films/shorts, and a few others.... later on Lassie and Benji. Why did they have to CGI the dog? Was it really cheaper or did they have to have him do those horrible "cute" facial expressions?

As I indicated above, the CGI dog was played by a man in a motion capture suit (Terry Notary). That means Ford spent his days interacting with a guy pretending to be a dog. www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/call-wild-1279441"In a blow to animal employment in the acting profession, Buck, who boasts the vast majority of the onscreen time, is played not by one or more actual dogs but rather Terry Notary, a very human former Cirque du Soleil performer who delivers a motion-capture performance. Such is also the case with the many other dogs and other animals shown, giving this Call of the Wild a similar feel to such recent Disney photorealistic animated films as The Jungle Book and The Lion King." Terry himself even talks about accepting the role here: So on set Terry would look something like this (even though this is from a different film):
