Kellye Nakahara, the actress who played Nurse Kellye on MASH has passed away today.
One of the most well known "background" characters in all of television history, Nurse Kellye was seen in over 150 MASH episodes, all the way from the Trapper/Blake days right up to the memorable final episode. Nakahara was always a pleasant addition to any scene, whether she had lines or not. Sometimes her facial expressions alone could bring a lot to a scene.
Nurse Kellye was always in the background, except for one WONDERFUL episode in the final season where she got center stage in a storyline involving a secret crush that she always had for Hawkeye. Nakahara more than held her own in a couple of dramatic scenes with Alan Alda. Kudos to MASH for giving her a chance to bask in the spotlight for once.
RIP

You Know, It's kind of surprising that the nurses were so overlooked at the time... The Doctor's performed the surgery, but it was the Nurses who took care of the patients throughout their recovery... I Just recently watched several episodes of the show on DVD, and I couldn't help but realize that the nurses tent, only seemed to have just FOUR nurses living in there at any given time. That doesn't seem like enough to take care of a whole ward of patients, 24/7. Right? Sadly, many of the "background" nurses always remained in the background, and I really feel sorry for all those different actresses who ended up playing the same stock "Nurse Able" & "Nurse Baker" characters. They deserved better. But, as already noted, there were a few lucky ones, here and there, over the years that had more to do than others... Nurse Ginger & Nurse Bigalo, for example... And... as millar70 noted : Nurse Kellye WAS probably the best well known of the original "background" characters of the show, to rise to the top, and who always was "a pleasant addition to any scene"... And thankfully, she got a real name along the way too... Kellye Nakahara, Thank You for the wonderful memories you gave us as Nurse Kellye, and RIP.
