A 67 year old coach with no pro experience is asked to start with a team devoid of talent. And he isn't winning? What a shock!!

He left coaching NCAA, the Wolverines, to go to the NBA and coach the Cleveland Cavaliers

A 67 year old coach with no pro experience is asked to start with a team devoid of talent. And he isn't winning? What a shock!! Sweet pivot, but does anyone believe the particular urgency to get Beilein out this fast is about not winning? He called his players "thugs" in the course of chiding them. Then he gave the worst fake apology I've ever seen wherein he pretended he meant to say "slugs". His players hate him, no getting around it. Speaking of his age, how does a man, a basketball coach, get to be 67 and still lack fundamental respect for his players? It says a lot about what he thought, or did not think of the young men, of all races, who passed through his programs over the years. Obviously, I'm no Carolina fan, but somewhere Dean Smith turned over in his grave when Beilein called his own players "thugs".

Why did the Cavs even picked him up anyway.

Why did the Cavs even picked him up anyway. And why did he go? I see these headlines about The real failure would've been Beilein not trying to make it in the NBA. Huh? Do they conflate being a coach with being a player? Too late now, but he had a good thing going at Michigan.

Who cares? About the Cavs or about Beilein. Does anyone think they'd be on their way to relevance if Steve Kerr signed on as coach or that Beilein would be the perfect guy to coach a contender? Makes no difference one way or another.
Personally, I would hold on to him till at least the end of the year. When your franchise is a complete mess to start with a coaching merry-go-round is not what you need. But it,'s the Cavs so I'd say he's gone.

Beilein didn't sedate his 6 year-old son and then put his hands around his tiny neck and choke the life out of him for the couple/few minutes that takes, like Benoit did to his kid, so I'm not allowed to post about him, right?

I'm not the NBA expert, but don't most big time CBB coaches fall flat in the NBA? Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Jerry Tarkanian, Larry Brown. Not sure how Billy Donovan is doing in Oklahoma.

Donovan looks like he's gonna stick around and keep growing as an NBA coach and Brad Stevens is pretty appreciated as the coach for the Celtics after doing great coaching Butler. I'd say that you have to be younger to switch and adapt well, as common sense would dictate, but that wouldn't account for Calipari and Pitino who both switched to the NBA at comparable ages to when Stevens and Donovan did. Cleveland should've stuck to looking at NBA assistant coaches, and Beilein should've stuck with Michigan, to state the obvious.

He had offers I think it's so good he didn't go; maybe that's selfishness, though. The push to get him there (mostly from Kobe) really did come from the right place and for the right reasons. Kobe had never been to Uni, then on Team USA he had that rapport with Coach K that he'd never had because, as it's been pointed out, coaches haven't traditionally coached so much in the NBA. The players played and the coaches did well to not interfere too much. I think Brad Stevens might be at the forefront of changing that and Gregg Popovich gets full frontiersman credit for paving the way. But if Coach K had gone to the Lakers when he had offers... I'm not sure I can see the players having that, that hands-on level of coaching and strategizing. So, Kobe was right to pursue it and Coach K was right to turn it down (maybe), but I know he would've done great, because he did with Team USA; he loves his players, understands and respects them and so they reciprocate, like Kobe did. I am afraid it would've wrecked him, healthwise. And I love him being at Duke, still.

I read this board a ton and I don't see you replying to threads Who cares? Makes no difference one way or another. Did you bother to show up to TristamShandy's thread about Beilein last May just to be like No one cares? No. It's weird to show up to a thread to say No one cares.

Larry Brown took Iverson and the Sixers to the finals and later won a ring as coach of the Pistons. He is the only person to coach both an NCAA team and an NBA team to titles.
