The only thing that surprised me about the Gabi reveal was that it was actually for keeps and that they didn't cop out and have it turn out to be a fantasy sequence. They were playing to the hilt to such a degree yesterday, that even when it ended on a cliffhanger, such as it was, I wouldn't have been surprised they replayed those last few moments and then revealed that none of it was real.
I also wasn't surprised that JJ managed to stop the pacemaker guy from giving them the rigged pacemaker at some point off screen; though I wasn't expecting them to have Julie in on it. That just seemed a little over the top for Julie to go in all smiles and attack Lani all on the off chance that Gabi wouldn't just keep denying the charge and actually try to use the app. I mean, how dumb do you have to be in a situation like that actually attempt murder in response to being accused of threatening to commit murder? Gabi might have had a reasonable out if she stuck to the story that Lani was lying. Even with JJ figuring things out with the pacemaker guy and bring Julie into the loop, Gabi could have kept denying it and try to shovel blame on Lani.
Was it me or did anyone else have a hard time telling if Lani was wearing a dress or for some reason decided to strip down to some lingerie? Either way, it would be way too fucking cold to be wearing only that outside in Illinois in fucking February.
Lani's excuse about why she didn't just tell Eli or anyone else when Gabi originally made the threat still makes absolutely no sense. Is Eli that much of an idiot or loud mouth that had she told him there'd be no keeping the fact that he knew from Gabi? They couldn't have found a subtle way of privately informing Julie and Kayla and checking it out, possibly replacing the pacemaker quietly, without Gabi knowing?
Speaking of replacing pacemakers, they piqued my curiosity to find out how likely it would be that Julie would have her's replaced in the morning and officiating that evening. Is it really the outpatient procedure they made it out to be?
No, of course not. While they may not necessarily need to spend the night in the hospital (though you might), from what I could find online, it a) still involves an incision to remove the old device and implant the new; and b) the patient is typically advised to take it easy for at least a couple of days to a week and can take up to four weeks to be back at 100%.
You gotta love the line reading Eli's mom gave on her line yesterday about how "it's possible, but the technology was never meant to be used for that....."
It was like something out of an SNL sketch parodying a soap opera.
The stuff with Doug and celebrating Bill Hayes being on the show for 50 years was nice, but I kind of think they could have found a better way to bring it up. I mean, I get Bill Horton was pretty essential to what brought Doug onto the show, but way to put a dampener on the reminiscing. Never mind them changing gears from Jen saying, "my dad died," to making it all about Doug or how jarring that was.
I have mixed feelings about them killing off Bill Horton; I mean, on the one hand he hasn't been a major part of the show in a really long time, but I don't think that's kind of a mark against the show in that regard. And at this point Bill would have to be at the age where, like Doug, it's unlikely he'd be able to be a central figure now. But he still arguably remained an important figure in the show's history; and this such an unceremonious way to write in his death, primarily as an excuse to celebrate some other character for one thing. And then they're not even going to going to go to the trouble of having a Salem funeral or try to get the Hortons together to celebrate this legacy character.
One last observation is the fact that we have yet another in-story time marker for a character who ties in with other characters. So by virtue of the fact that Doug has only been in Salem for 50 years, Hope would apparently need to be under 50; and likewise Shawn would have to be in his early 30s, if even that, since if Hope was only 49, she'd have to have had Shawn at 18 or 19 for him to even be 30 now....
I did get a kick out of the clip of who I assume was a young Hope when Julie was reminiscing about Doug becoming a father. Obviously it's not the same actress, of course, but in spite of that you almost take for granted that aspect of the history someone like Hope has with the show to have been born on the show and grown up, more or less. Aside for her and Jennifer, are there even any other characters like that still on the show? I think Sarah was technically born on the show, but it'd been so long since she was previously on, I don't think we saw much of her growing up. We have that with Shawn, but he's more away than he is around. There's Will.
