I didn't include the original "Airport" because it is not really a disaster pic. It's more like a glossy, slightly over-produced old-fashioned melodrama. I find it okay, with Maureen Stapleton being the best thing in it.
I picked "Airport 1975" because it really is the epitome of everything that was fun about these movies. I am betting that most posters will pick TPA, which is also a goodie. I emphatically did not care for "The Towering Inferno". I find it quite mean spirited and slow-moving. I hated that Susan Flannery and Jennifer Jones died.

I was gonna say Towering Inferno, but I've never seen it. My favorite is Earthquake, for the not-at-all-bad all star cast (duh) and for the fake onscreen blood as the people in an elevator meet their ultimate demise. Miles and away more impactful than that San Andreas movie, with much fewer people to give a damn about.
I chose "other".

I have only seen two of those.
The Poseidon Adventure, which is a damn fine disaster flick.
And Avalanche, which is a damn mess.
I picked Poseidon Adventure.

'The Poseidon Adventure' - with 'Earthquake', 'The Towering Inferno', 'The Swarm' and 'Beyond The Poseidon Adventure' rounding out my top 5. Shoot! I forgot "Earthquake"! I am going to see if I can go back and insert the movie. I liked it a lot. Earthquake was the first major disaster film I saw. Hadn't seen The Towering Inferno until around early 80's on re-release. I loved Earthquake when I was a kid and got to see it in 70mm Sensurround. It impressed me for a long time. I think I may have seen The Poseidon Adventure in the late 70's too, before Inferno. It was a double feature with The French Connection, which I hated. Still not overly sold on it. Saw both Airport 77' and Airport 80: The Concorde at the time of release. Only really liked 77'. Need to see 75'.
After a few or several re-watches of these films, TPA has taken the pip. It just has something about it the others don't. Even the dated aspect of it gives the film charm, while Inferno and Earthquake are dated and even cheesy bad. EQ is the better though and a bittersweet ending. TTI is just too long and flatly directed in stretches. It's mean-spiritedness doesn't even work in well with the context of the narrative, like the tragedies in Poseidon do. Poseidon just flows so much more easily, the cast was magic and the emotional impact was well conveyed.
Mr. Dirty, forgot to mention The Cassandra Crossing - 77'. That one was terrific at the time and still in the disaster realm. I still enjoy watching it.

I never really cared for the 70s disaster genre, but I did like Two-Minute Warning.
Actually, Airport '77 was good as well.

The Towering Inferno.
If I get around to it, watching one of its ilk tonight - City On Fire (1979).

The Towering Inferno is the daddy in my book, but I do adore TPA. Earthquake, like what Toasted Cheese said, it was a great theatre experience and I still have a soft spot for it.
Others that demand a mention are The China Syndrome and The Andromeda Strain, while The Hindenburg was very popular back in the decade and is worth a watch for sure.
Two-Minute Warning and Rollercoaster get lumped into the disaster genre but they are just great thrillers involving a madman on the loose! - Very much recommended though.
