Superior and exciting crime drama. Outstanding direction from Brian De Palma, who provides plenty of stylish camera shots and makes sure that all the background actors and extras are doing interesting things. And he knows how to stage a brutally bloody and seemingly realistic gunfight. Al Pacino delivers a first-rate performance as the aging criminal who has difficulty adapting to a new era, as does Sean Penn as his cokehead lawyer. Stunning set designs and art direction that vividly recreates the very decadent mid-1970s era.

Ah yes. De Palma's spiritual sequel to Scarface. Brutal and intense, with yet another fine performance from Pacino. Gotta love that ending as well.
My rating: 9/10.

9/10 - My favorite movie of 1993. One of De Palma's very best.

A 90's gem from Pacino and De Palma. Sean Penn is a highlight.

9/10 - My favorite movie of 1993. One of De Palma's very best. Perhaps De Palma's last great movie to date.

Movies like Carlito's Way and Casino don't feel like a reunion/rehash to me even though they largely use the same personnel.

I would also say this film has probably one of David Koepp's best screenplays.

The train station scene is classic. I was on the edge of my seat when I first saw it.

There are only three movies from that director that stand out, which for me are...
1)Scarface (1983) - 8/10 2)Mission Impossible (1996) - 7.5-8/10 3)Carlito's Way (1993) - 7/10
NOTE: Carlito's Way dropped off on my most recent viewing in Oct 2018 as it was a 9/10. hell, even Scarface jumped around a bit in score for me as it was a 10/10 for years until Dec 2016 when it dropped back to a 7/10, then in July 2019 went back up to a solid 8/10. Mission Impossible on the other hand has pretty much been at it's current score for about as long as I can remember (or at least since my rating system became more stable).

Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Carlito's Way - 3 out of 4 stars
"Street-wise Puerto Rican Pacino winds up a five-year jail term and tries to go straight, but loyalty to his sleazy lawyer (Penn), and his inability accept the fact that "the street" has changed, seal his doom. Flawed but still compelling; based on two Edwin Torres novels about a man with an outmoded code of honor. Pacino is arresting as always; so is an almost unrecognizable Penn. Director Paul Mazursky has a terrific cameo as a judge at the beginning of the story. Followed by a direct-to-video "prequel" in 2005."

There were plans for a remake with Diego Luna in the Pacino role, but the project seems to be off the table.

7/10. Pacino and Penn are very good in this. Penelope Ann Miller was so hot too. Whatever happened to her?
