1931 to 2020. Founder and chairman of the National Underwater and Marine Agency. I loved his Dirk Pitt series. If that doesn’t ring any bells, the Matthew McConaughey movie Sahara (2005) was based off one such book.

I don't think I ever read any of his stuff but I'm very familiar with his name. Maybe I should read a few of his books - any suggestions? 88 is a good age, I'm 70 and I don't think I'll make it to 88.

I read and enjoyed a bunch of his books, but gave up on them when they became too formulaic. Still, he gave me a lot of fun. RIP.

Was it he who went down the James Patterson "factory" route at the end?

Most series become formulaic but sometimes that's what great about a series. I love my cozy "cat mysteries", they are a comfort to me at the end of the day, I know what to expect and its like visiting old friends. I still enjoy well written stand alone books but often this old lady just wants something easy on the mind to help me go to sleep. I usually read the exciting and mentally challenging stuff during the day.

Was it he who went down the James Patterson "factory" route at the end? Yes, he started doing that sort of thing as well.

RIP. Never read anything he wrote, but didn’t particularly like Sahara (sorry, politicidal, I know you like it). Anyone have any recommendations?

He’s my husband’s favourite author. Always looks forward to the next Clive Cussler
