I've heard/read many people say that it's acceptable for a teacher to date a student as long as it happens after the course has ended (no conflict of interest) and as long as they're both adults. Do you agree? Whatever your answer is, would your opinion change depending on how much time passes after the end of the course before they start dating? Would it change depending on whether the student was or not an adult when the course started? What about their interactions? I mean, would they be able to have romantic chemistry or is the teacher/student dynamic something that never goes away?

As long as they're both of legal age, having mutual consent, the student no longer attending the same school as the teacher, and the teacher not being in any school or position that could have any influence on the student's education and/or grades above other students, then it seems OK.

A friend did that once. It was barely a year after she graduated, so that implies the guy was fixated on her for a while which freaks the hell out of me.

If they are both of an age where they can legally make their own decisions the "I feel" that it is none of my or anyone else's business. So everybody butt out.

When I was in high school back in the early 80s, I had a female friend who was a couple of years older. After she graduated, she started dating a teacher (pretty quickly too), and they eventually married. Still married to this day as a matter of fact. In my own experience, I taught for a few years at the start of this century, and after I had been out of the profession for about three years, I ran into a former student one night, who was now in college. We went out on a few dates just for fun, had some nice evenings, and parted ways. I agree with mikef6 , it's really nobody's damn business once said student is out of school.

Then what's the problem?

If he had been fixated, wouldn't he have waited less than a year? Oh, wait... "as long as they're both adults, and the course is over?" Then what's the problem? Well, I addressed all the variables in my O.P.

Humans connect and form an attraction, and it often leads to sex and relationships. We have laws that protect minors from sexual exploitation at the hands of adults but once they're no longer minors there's no use in trying to control what people do. No, I have no problem at all with it.
