Joanne Woodward Joanne Woodward was born on February 27, 1930 in Thomasville, Georgia. She began her acting career in the early 1950s in live television and in 1957 she received an Oscar as Best Actress for her third feature film, The Three Faces of Eve.In a career spanning over six decades, she received three more Oscar nominations, ten Golden Globe nominations (winning three), four BAFTA Film Award nominations (winning one), and nine Primetime Emmy nominations (winning three). She met her husband, Paul Newman, in 1953 when he was appearing on Broadway in Picnic, and she was the understudy for Janice Rule in the role of Madge. They married in 1958 and remained married for 50 years until his death in 2008.
Enjoying her well-deserved Oscar.
Family strong:
In Rachel, Rachel (1968), directed by husband Paul:
With Karen Allen in The Glass Menagerie (1987), also directed by Paul.
Love enduring:
With daughter Claire at a Newman's Own charity event for their The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for kids, including those with disabilities and handicaps:
Happy 90th Birthday to Joanne Woodward, one of our finest actresses and a generous philanthropist. The arts and the world have been made a better place by your journey through it. Thanks for all your good works and your many wonderful performances.

Happy birthday to "the duchess of downbeat" (D Quinlan)
A Joanne top 5
NO DOWN PAYMENT - a very sharp look at four young couples in a new housing development - that one's reputation definitely on the rise. THE LONG HOT SUMMER - her best with hubbie THE STRIPPER (very effective wildly against type) THE SHADOW BOX (Showing she could give Shirley Maclaine a run for her money in the "kookie" stakes when she tried) PARIS BLUES - along ago memory but a very fond one.
I thought THREE FACES OF EVE was just dandy in my teens but I couldn't make it through a revisit a couple of years back.
She herself is excellent in THE FUGITIVE KIND - - she gave great slattern.....but the film overall an interesting failure.
THE SOUND AND THE FURY worth a peek too but Margaret Leighton's Blanche Dubois like mum steals it.

I adore this woman who seems to get more attractive as she ages. A lot of very memorable roles, and a consummate professional. Happy Birthday, Joanne!!

When I saw the thread title my first reaction was to think "if she's 90, how old is Paul Newman?". I had no recollection that he's been dead for 12 years!

Terrific in The Three Faces of Eve. I also liked her in The Long Hot Summer and A Big Hand For the Little Lady.
