I have always loved RotJ. I think it's an underrated classic. But I do think the first two movies are better. Replacing the Ewoks with Wookies would be an improvement for sure. I don't mind the Ewoks though, even if they are the weakest part of the OT.

It would be an improvement, but it still wouldn't solve the problem of re-hashing the Death Star....

Would have been elevated to TESB levels if they'd used Gungans insteads. Much more intimidating creatures than both the Wookies and the Ewoks.

would that put the film on the same level as Empire Strikes Back (1980) for you ? It's already above that level for me, so no.

no, the RotJ screenplay simply suffers from too many issues, beginning with the muppet-show of the first act, the shoehorned family drama and the all-too-easy stake-less victories.
Wookies would make it actually worse as this would make the Empire look even more incompetent (who overlooks a powerful warrior-population of tech-bigfoots next door...?).
The Ewoks at least served their purposes, they were comic relief next to the dramatic dogfights and duels, they embodied the "size matters not" theme and were the only truly new thing (stone age culture of teddy bears) in this film.

Episode 6 was suppose to be Wookiees, but it would have ate too much of their budget to create all the Wookiee costumes for the actors. It was way more cost effective to have little people play the roles of Ewoks, which required way less materials per costume.
I really like Episode 6 despite the recycled Death Star part. There's so much that was new (all that's seen at Jabba's Palace alone) that added to the franchise, but didn't take away from it like with the ST. All the main characters got to shine throughout it. The pacing is excellent. The throne room scene is fantastic to this day and Vader's story was very satisfyingly concluded. It's a movie that has a lot heart/emotion to it.
The Ewoks didn't ever bother me like other people. They actually added to the story by furthering the plot (unlike those awful porgs). Without the Ewoks, the Rebels would have lost.
