I watched the Criterion disc which has the restored director’s cut ending. It was the first time to see it in context of the full film. I had only been familiar with the abbreviated ambiguous end and didn’t know of Aldrich’s preference until later. At first, I didn’t think the full scene – not exactly a happy ending but showing the main characters’ escape – would be the right way to go. Now, I agree that it really does work although I still have feelings for the uncertainty of the shorter version.
