As a youngster I was told by an older kid (my next-door neighbour) that they were called butcher/butchy boys, and I’ve been calling them that ever since. It must be a Melbourne thing. When I think of a butcher I think of someone who slaughters animals. Is there another meaning for "butcher" in Australia?

Sorry to be pedantic but I called them "bugs" for a reason. The woodlouse is a crustacean, not an insect.

So it's insects & bugs here then - even more interesting indeed  .
