For the CBB fans...
Stephen F. Austin has a record of 23-3 at the moment. Beat Duke in Cameron. BUT, ranked #80 in the NET rankings and #104 at KenPom. That's below a 20 loss Kansas State, an anemic Georgia, mid-majors with worse records like Akron, UNC Greensboro, Furman and others. Now, if they don't win the Southland Conference, do the get an at large bid? The Southland is a truly pathetic conference (4 20 loss teams, 2nd place is 19-10), but that's not their fault. They lost to Rutgers and Alabama and to a sad Texas A&M Corpus Christi team. Since the Duke win, SFA hasn't beaten anyone raked higher than #178 at Kenpom. How much does that one win count for on Selection Sunday?

Maybe the have a shot at the First 4 - i.e. the group of games held on Tuesday and Wed nights in Dayton?

Maybe the have a shot at the First 4 - i.e. the group of games held on Tuesday and Wed nights in Dayton? I'm the biggest fan of the mid majors, but I can't see giving them a berth for one game. One point in reality (SFA beat Duke on OT). They lose in the Southland final, their record would be 29-4. Gaudy, but empty. They also played three non D1 teams. I'm not all agog over beatdowns of Southeastern Louisiana and Incarnate Word.

I think they gotta win their conference. Yes, the win over Duke is huge, but it wasn't like they blew them out or won by even 6 or 7. It was an overtime victory, tough to just ride on that if they don't get the at-large bid.

Or one SFA player misses one he makes and we aren't having this conversation. Too thin. I was thinking that SFA should get a bid no matter what. 29 wins, you have to be kidding. But there's no way the Southland Conference should be a two bid conference, Not when the Atlantic 10 might (might) be a one bid conference.

For the smaller leagues, I wish the conference tournaments did not determine a school getting into the dance. You can still have the conference tournaments if you want, but give it to the team that actually won the conference over three months, not three days.

Like I said, I'm a big supporter of the mid majors. I think a team should have a .500 conference record to be eligible for the NCAA. A team shouldn't be allowed to sleepwalk through January and February then expect a bid because they beat the dregs of a major conference. On the other hand, it's tough to see a mid major dominate the season then get the NIT because of one bad game. But this is beyond any reasonable discussion. My Grandmother's bridge club could be .500 in the Southland.
