Frederick Valentich was an Australian pilot who disappeared while on a 125-nautical-mile (232 km) training flight in a Cessna 182L light aircraft registered VH-DSJ, over Bass Strait on the evening of Saturday, 21 October 1978. Described as a "flying saucer enthusiast", twenty-year-old Valentich informed Melbourne air traffic control he was being accompanied by an aircraft about 1,000 feet (300 m) above him and that his engine had begun running roughly, before finally reporting, "It's not an aircraft." There were belated reports of a UFO sighting in Australia on the night of the disappearance; however, the Associated Press reported that the Department of Transport was sceptical a UFO was behind Valentich's disappearance, and that some of their officials speculated that "Valentich became disorientated and saw his own lights reflected in the water, or lights from a nearby island, while flying upside down." www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsiT99vpG_8&t=72s

I've seen a tv documentary episode on him. Do YOU know about the one in NZ on a helicopter with a reporter and photographer back in 1978, I believe?

This is an odd case, which I heard about this on "Unsolved Mysteries" and I think on "In Search Of..." years ago.
I think the video posted above, also shows... (Sorry I didn't watch)
There was an authentic photo taken that night which captured a strange cloud of smoke in the sky... and there was at least one witness who saw a strange green light flying around Valentich's plane, just as Frederick Valentich described over the radio...
If this was the only UFO story in history, you could probably easily dismiss it... But there have been so many claims, that haven't come close to being completely debunked...
And the evidence on this one does seems to suggest, that no one can realistically explain what all happened, without still leaving the possibility of it still being a genuine encounter.
Disorientated? Perhaps...
We'll probably never know for sure, one way or another.
