Fucking hell. Essendon suck. Unbelievable that they almost threw away a 30 point lead...at home...to Fremantle.
Spesking of teams that suck, Warriors lost 20-6 to the Raiders. Improvement on first round, but they would have been hard pressed not to.

Manly over the Roosters 9-8. Swans hold on to beat Adelaide 74-71 in a thriller. Taylor Walker could have won it for the Crows but missed late.
The way our predictions are going Saints- Kangas will be the match of the round.

The Dragons are bad, but jeez the Warriors are on another level of fuckery. 160 minutes of football, and a very dubious penalty try is all they’ve got.
DCE iced the game for the Sea Eagles against the Roosters - both sides looked very good defensively and once the Roosters find their cohesion in attack they will be fine. Rabbitohs next week won’t be easy for them though. Not many premiers start a season 0-3.....
Cronulla currently leading the Storm 4-2. But my dinner break is over. Back to driving no-one around Sydney Town. Never seen a Saturday this quiet, ever.

Storm win it 12-10. Tbe Gints beat the Cats and Gold Coast Suns are a rabble, putting up 29 points against a Port team in autopilot.

AFL shuts down until June. With tne announcement by state governments banning non essential travel between states there was no way they could do it. Only way NRL can continue is if they're all in one place. Getting very hard.

Looking at these arse hats congregating around the ground to watch the game, you almost have to play all the games in big stadiums from here. People just can't be trusted to do the right thing.

Yeah, far too difficult for the AFL with teams based in 5 states (with regular games played in the 6th and a Territory too). I think unless the Government explicitly ban sports, the NRL will keep playing, probably with their 16 teams in Queensland plan.....

Tigers fans aren’t exactly the sharpest tools in the shed 🤨🤨🤨 onfield - The Tigers had an absolute shocker against Newcastle 42-24. Some very, very soft tries in that one. Parramatta now 26-6 up against the Titans with 18 to go. The lads from the Coast simply cannot hold onto the ball.

Queensland's jyst closed its borders. Surely it's time for the NRL to hold up the white flag?

It's official: NRL suspends their season. It was getting increasingly difficult to justify the comp as anything but a money making exercise, and given how many businesses and individuals are losing money at the moment, that's just not a good enough reason.

It will be interesting to see what happens from here - The NZ Warriors, Manly and St George Illawarra are all on very shaky ground without any cash flow, and if it keeps going for long Canberra, Nth Qld, and Cronulla are on the next rung down and may be in a fair bit of drama. Penrith, Canterbury, Parramatta, Wests and Newcastle have huge asset heavy Leagues Clubs to bail them out, but for how long is the question. Souths, Melbourne and Gold Coast have very rich financial backers but don’t know how much money they have to tip in. Brisbane won’t be going broke. The Roosters ? Who knows. Officially, Uncle Nick doesn’t have any ownership nor any financial stake in the Chooks, but we all know that their paltry leagues club isn’t funding much. Will he let them die ? I can’t see it.

It is uncertain times for sure, particularly for the NRL, but teams like North Melbourne and St Kilda (Saints lost more money than GC last decade) will struggle too. Real risk of 12-14 team NRL comp and a 16 team AFL next year. If the NRL loses two Sydney teams and the AFL two Melbourne clubs then that's no bad thing for either competition.

I genuinely think their are 1 club too many in Melbourne (AFL) and Sydney (NRL). Maybe natural attrition helps rationalise both comps like you say. Im still amazed the AFL has essentially 2 Brisbane and 2 Sydney clubs but none in Tasmania or Regional Victoria. And if North and / or Saints go to the wall, I believe their will be a massive amount of backlash in the southern states that 2 “traditional” clubs have departed whilst the AFL has pumped extraordinary amounts of money into the Suns and Giants. As for the NRL - the likeliest clubs to go belly up are Warriors and Manly. Most wont really care if the Warriors go. I know I won’t. Manly is different as a traditional club. And, whilst not flying, St George Illawarra are pretty safe. The NRL will do everything it can to save the Dragons - kicking Souths out was met with backlash. The Dragons ? The Red V ? It will be a public relations bloodbath....

The main difference between Souths being thrown out of the comp and a traditional club going under now is the Souths decision was coming just a couple of years removed from the Super League war. Fans were already disillusioned and saw the people running the game as greedy arseholes, now they're throwing the most successful club out because News Corp wants 14 teams? No way! It easn't just Souths fans who were angry, it was every lapsed fan who was just pissed off wiyh everything that had jappened to their game over the past decade. If Manly went to the wall at a time businesses all over the country are going to the wall it wouldn't have the same impact. As for the Warriors, most kiwis probably don't know they exist to start with.
St George with their huge but dormant fanbase would be a harder proposition. In 2010, as in 2014 with the Bunnies, there were a lot of former fans engaged who hadn't watched a game, or at least not followed their team closely, for 10-15 years who came up out of the woodwork and reminded us that in the 60s and 70s, this was Richmond vs Collingwood today.
North should have relocated to Gold Coast years ago, playing 8 games in Carrara and 3-4 in Darwin. GWS should be in Canberra and maybe playing the odd home game at Homebush (against the Swans and Collingwood/ Essendon) and an 18th team in Tasmania. Down the track one of St Kilda or the Bulldogs needs to go so they can put a 3rd team in WA, and eventually another of those should go for a third team in SA, with the Demons and Carlton selling games to regional Victoria.
Problem for both comps is: if you were starting from scratch to set up a national comp, the AFL would not have 9 teams in Melbourne (or 18 teams at all) and the NRL would not have 11 clubs located between Newcastle and Canberra.

AFLPA seem to think they are in contract negotiations with the AFL: they aren't. Their pay will be determined by banks and governments as that is the only revenue stream. I think ideally you cut every player's salary to the AFLPA minimum base wage and then trim the remaining fat off that. No player's worth more than 150-200 k if they aren't playing.
League clubs laying off staff and standing down coaches and assistants. Ones I feel for are the Warriors players who are stuck here with limited finances unable to leave.
In some positive news, Kayo is replaying classic matches between the two teams who were scheduled to run around this weekend. The Collingwood/ Richmomd classic was from 2016 where Brodie Grundy kicked a goal out of nowhere in the last 5s to snatch victory. 3 goals in the last 3 minutes to snatch that win. And they got Eddie to commentate the whole game!

And finally we're back with fake crowd noise (which I don't mind actually, good for some ambience) and Parra leading 2 tries to 1. Nearly got a third but the pass is called forward. Moses has looked good thus far. Brisbane's try was quality off a long run.

I'm used to going to quiet non-league games, but on commentary it just feels weird without it.

It just takes away the eery echoing of player's voices as much as anything.
Anyway. Parra 12-6 at half time. Brisbane should be happy to only be down by 6 after Parra comtrolled possession. But it's a weird game in that Brisbane have bombed a couple of tries.

Parra run away with it in the 2nd Half. 34-6 was a fair reflection of the dominant Eels performance. The rule changes worked well, but it’s one game. I’ll give it a full going over after the full round of games. It’s just great to have footy back !

Morons on Social Media already out in force saying the resumption of sport will single handedly result in a second wave of Covid 19. If you don't have morons saying CV is an exagerated flu you have morons saying we should lock ourselves inside and never come out or else we are killing people. At some point you have to sensibly get things going. Some fit young men who are regularly tested running around on weekends in empty stadiums really is not a high risk venture.
