I genuinely considered him an acting colossus - one of the all-time greats, able to convey so much with the simplest gesture and boasting one of the most magnetic voices in the business. So many wonderful performances to remember him by... from Bergman to Game of Thrones is quite the career path.

What a sad day. He was giant, who will be missed and remembered forever for so many wonderful performances through the years. Rest in peace, Mr. Von Sydow. You made the world a better place with your art, showing us so much about who we are.

The last film of his I watched was THE KREMLIN LETTER. But the most current film of his I have seen is ROBIN HOOD--so depressing. I never bothered with the Star Wars movie he was in but it was clever that they cast him since they must have felt they needed someone of similar in clout to Alec Guinness (did 1960s historical epic...). And they appeared in THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM together though I can't recall if they had any scenes together.
I tended to think he was older than he was thanks to the makeup job in the Exorcist.

He was so menacing as the killer in THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and a commanding presence in any film he appeared in. Thank you, Mr. von Sydow. Your performances have enriched our lives.

Paradoxically, he played an aging priest forty-seven years ago. A good run.

A great actor who gave us performances, but not his personality. Have no idea from whence he drew those icy harsh men, but he was magnificent, and no one trick pony. I would not say he ever played a character that was cuddley. But he was warm and simple in The Emmigrants.

He always cracks me up as Frederick, the misanthropic artist, in Hannah and Her Sisters. "It's been ages since I sat in front of the tv, changing channels to find something. You see the whole culture: Nazis, deodorant salesmen, wrestlers, beauty contests, the talk show. Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling? But the worst are the fundamentalist preachers. Third-rate con men, telling the suckers that they speak for Jeeesus, and to please send in money. Money, money. If Jesus came back today and saw what's going on in his name he'd never stop throwing up."
