Were you aware of the nonsense about number 24?

Oh yes. That the word for “deer” is also a slur against gay men is very well known (it would be unthinkable to do a direct translation of The Deer Hunter, for example), and so is the association between the number 24 and deer, even among people who have never played the illegal “animal lottery” in their lives (I would guess that it’s the only number/animal combination that most people know off the top of their heads).

I brought up the coolest. True. Not many people know, but Willie Mays is a real horses ass. A guy I knew met him at a convention. He made a comment that the Say Hey Kid didn't like. He was in line, paying $100 to get a game worn jersey autographed. Mays wrote "Go Fuck Yourself" on the jersey. He didn't notice until later (the people who ran the convention reimbursed him for the autograph and the jersey).

He is Barry Bonds's godfather, kind of makes sense.

The Brazilian national team currently playing in the Copa America skips shirt number 24 - there's 23 and then there's 25. Not sure how they got away with it; I was under the impression that FIFA did not allow skipping shirt numbers (which is a good thing, otherwise teams would certainly start fielding players with idiotic numbers like 39 or 57 or 81).
Anyway, an LGBT group protested and a judge has now officially demanded an explanation from the Brazilian FA as to why #24 is not being used, and who was responsible for that decision.

Gary Hooper when he played for Celtic wore the number 88 because the club was formed in 1988. If it had been formed in 1900 would be have been allowed to wear 00?

Something I didn't notice until this season. College basketball players are forbidden to wear anything with 6 to 9 in it. 6, 17, 28, etc. Why, referees signal fouls using the fingers on one hand. Foul on 14 would be one finger on one hand, four on the other. Tough to hold up eight fingers on one hand.
Been an avid CBB since 1975 and I just caught this now.
