Watched this last night...
It's not quite a horror, but getting there. I knew what it was about and picked up a DVD copy the other day.
What did you think?
I thought it was quite the ride, and quite a disturbing watch in places.
Do you think Hayley was a raging psycho, and picking targets she could self-justify herself torturing and killing, rather than her being a vigilante?
Were the things Jeff confessed to by the end things he actually did, or was he at that point broken and telling Hayley what she wanted to hear?

I remember thinking Jeff was telling the truth in the end...or at least close to it. I remember they made it seem like him and the other guy both claimed the other one did it...but i think the point was they were both guilty.

I grew bored with it when everyone involved starting acting stupidly. There was nobody to relate to or root for.

@ned ... To give you my opinion of what this film is... It's definitely not a horror movie, although it does have some horrifying ideas and psychological torture scenes (Hayley to Jeff). The movie is a mystery/thriller, at least to me. A fun one at that, as the film is low budget and independent; which is where I think most of the best films are nowadays. The film was a fun ride for me when I first watched it. I showed the movie to a couple different people since, who also equally loved the film. For a movie with almost no cast and very little atmosphere (outside of Jeff's entire home), the movie never loses your attention but instead keeps you guessing what can happen next. I think it can be very difficult for any movie to grab your attention that well and not lose it. Although the ending did make me wish I could have seen more, lol. My favorite scene off the top of my head is when Hayley finds the safe in the home. The build-up of her looking for it, Jeff's reaction before and after. The entire group of scenes really shows Jeff go from confident, frightened, to guilty. Then the smarts of Hayley, getting it open. They often say every great horror/thriller has a scene that they don't show fans and let the audience themselves use their imagination for. The movie "Se7en" had this, the movie "Silence of the Lambs" had this. The contents of what was in the safe is that scene for this movie. Actor Patrick Wilson (Jeff), has the best emotional reaction to what she finds. The suspense was awesome in these scenes. I personally think, Hayley was pretending to be a sociopath in order to get in the head of Jeff, who she truly believed was a closet psychopath. In my opinion, this makes the most sense. It's why she stalks him over the internet, plays the teenager, the victim - then turning the tables on him, showing she's in charge, she's unpredictable, she's crazy and she's going to get what she wants from him. Hayley portrays a vindictive sociopath girl (which actress Ellen Page does perfectly in the role), making Jeff have to pretend he's an innocent victim, trustworthy photographer, etc. When she then reveals she knows as much as he does, about who the man behind the lens really is. It's a nice match between the cat versus the mouse, except who is the cat and who is the mouse. Hence the mystery.
I believe at the end, Hayley reveals that she had done this before to Jeff's friend/partner in crime. Hayley tortured him until the partner/friend said that Jeff was the man who killed Donna Mauer. And for some reason, I don't picture that partner/friend giving Hayley nearly as bad of a time as Jeff did in his capture. When Jeff finally pleads to Hayley on the roof his version of the story, she truly no longer cares who the real killer is. She might've not expected Jeff to put up the fight he did, but she wasn't going to leave without him getting caught or winding up dead one way or the other. I myself, think Jeff was the actual killer and did have a sick fetish for women (due to losing his ex who was his heart/innocence). I also think he did kill the missing girl Donna Mauer, whom he had a hidden photo of. We clearly saw Jeff's anger and lies throughout the entire film towards Hayley. Hayley lied to Jeff also, but she had to, for the truth. And I think Hayley was a close-close friend to the missing girl, Donna Mauer. She set out on this mission to find out what happened to Donna and who might have killed her. Hayley was never a sociopath, Hayley wasn't even 'Hayley;' but played one to catch a predator. In the last scene we see her walk off, barely. We almost see an unsuspected hero solve a victim's cold case (her friend). This is all my opinion of course. I could easily make Jeff look innocent and everything he said was true. If you add up the facts, though; I think the version I saw would be much more scarier for if it were real. Jeff being a psychopath murderer and Hayley almost becoming a victim herself. I hope it helps open your mind to the excellent film. Gifs included below.

I like it less and less the more I watch as well. Wilson and Page are nom worthy, but the movie feels like it ascends to contrived lengths.
