Underseen and undervalued, 'Shade' (2003) is a gem, like 'Maverick' (1994) and 'Rounders' (1998).
Just added this to my shopping list on your recommendation. I have always expected more from Stuart Townsend but he does not make many films, and most of what he does make are rubbish. How does he do in this?

Just added this to my shopping list on your recommendation. I have always expected more from Stuart Townsend but he does not make many films, and most of what he does make are rubbish. How does he do in this? He holds his own among a formidable cast of canny veterans. At StalloneZone, they rate this as one of Sly Stallone's best.

The Queen of Spades (1949) dir: Thorold Dickinson was based on Pushkin's short story and starred Anton Walbrook and Edith Evans. No doubt there are many filmed versions of this classic short story. I noticed another today: La Dame de Pique (1965) dir: Léonard Keigel, which differs from Dickinson's version in making the countess the main focus, rather than the unlucky officer, and she is played by none other than Dita Parlo, whose screen career began in 1928 and is best known as the female lead in Vigo' L'Atalante and Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion.
I have just re-watched the latter and thought Parlo's acting style was straight out of the silent era, so I would like to see her in a movie made as late as 1965. Curiously, her first movie was also about two escaped WWI prisoners, the highly regarded silent Heimkehr (1928) dir: Joe May.
