Gonna do the Cornetto Trilogy in order over next three nights. Haven't watched them for a while, so why not. They're good fun.
Shaun, Fuzz, Worlds

Gonna do the Cornetto Trilogy in order over next three nights. Shaun, Fuzz, Worlds I've seen the first two of those countless times, but I think I've only seen The World's End like twice. It never quite hit for me in the same way. I liked it, especially the first 2 acts, but the ending didn't entirely work. Also, even though he's good in it, trying to make Simon Pegg this shitty, immature addict friend who's a dick and everyone has outgrown is tricky. He's so inherently likeable that it's kind of a hard sell.

The Cornetto Trilogy plays squarely with British culture, whereas Paul takes a full turn to play to US audiences. I don't think that worked for Pegg and Frost.

BBC iPlayer just made every episode of Pretty Little Liars available do I'm watching the pilot of that.
Quite a few hot chicks in it, especially Ashley Benson.

I saw it just the one time when it first came out and I found it moderately enjoyable, but it's clearly nothing particularly special. I also don't know that it's particularly 'American comedy' outside of just the location. There are a few jokes that I just don't get at all (Jason Bateman's character's name sounds like Lorenzo's Oil... so?), and a lot of it is very silly and reliant on references. I think it's very clear after seeing what each of them has done independently that the greatest creative force of the trio is Edgar Wright, and he was the one that wasn't involved in that project.

I agree. They don't really make these kinds of movies anymore. They usually end up as 10 episode series, but I prefer this. Leto is fucking creepy as hell and Denzel looks like absolute shit the whole time from stress and sleeplessness. Rami Malek is doing his best, but I do think he's miscast because he's kinda playing the slick good guy, but he's so naturally weird that making him the regular guy is unnatural. The script was kinda by the numbers, but I appreciated where it went ultimately. It covers familiar ground, but I have to admit that I didn't see it coming. Not exactly the way it played out at least. Yeah I think that's what I appreciated about it, that they don't really make movies like this anymore, so it was good to see some serious star power in a murder mystery that isn't a netflix series. My only real problem is how the end plays out. There's no reason Malek's character would do any of that. He wouldn't bother getting in the car with him without telling Denzel, he wouldn't dig all those holes himself. He'd just make Leto do it. And then he just snaps. Meanwhile, what was Leto's motivation? He knew they were closing in so he made it into a suicide mission? Is there any doubt he was trying to get Malek to kill him? Just seemed too random. And they took too long to introduce Leto's character, so his entire arc felt rushed. Still good stuff overall. I did like the twist on top of the twist. They set up an ambiguous ending, then the barrette scene sets up a quasi-happy ending; then the barrette reveal makes it ambiguous again. I think Leto was just fucking with him and wasting his time. We still sort of don't know if he was who they thought he was... sort of. But the barrett thing let's you know that Denzel is pretty confident that he's right, because if he's wrong that would be revealed pretty quickly.. I liked how that played out though, as well as the reveal of Denzel's past. But yeah... there's no fucking way Rami gets in the car.

Watching Curb your Enthusiasm for the first time; just started the second season. Liking it so far, better than Seinfeld.

I gotta second the opinion above. There's no good reason to watch this. My wife binged it a while back. She watches stuff like that the way I watch a bunch of shitty horror movies. I ended up seeing a lot of it. It's pretty god damb terrible.

Hart of Dixie, or whatever soul-crushingly awful shit my wife watches is just, ugh. I almost feel bad for my TV for enduring it.

I don't know that show, I'm sure it sucks, but in general I can at least tolerate most of those awful shows in the background as long as they aren't trashy reality shows. I have a really hard time with that shit. But that cheap teen garbage is rough too. Like she just rewatched all of Dawson's Creek, and there was that time where she watched Gilmore Girls, and I'm not sure there's a worse thing to have on in the background than a bad show for teem girls that thinks it's dialogue is cute and witty.

Over the weekend I caught up with the most recent season of “Better Call Saul”. Still a pretty good show with great characters, but my enthusiasm for it is diminishing.

I'm hopefully going to have time to watch Mank (2020) tonight. Still haven't had time to watch. "You've had time to post on this board," I hear you all sneer. True, but that takes minutes. I'd have to set aside a couple of hours for a movie. I don't think I'll get to do it until after Christmas. In case anyone was wondering, still haven't watched it. I did have time last night to watch a pretty good celebration piece on Sean Connery, filmed for his 85th birthday and shown recently after his death. Plenty of archive interview footage and clips from his best performances. I enjoyed it thoroughly. What better way to mark his entry into my Action Heroes team as my first pick?

I found this past season to be better than the 2 that preceded it. Lalo just breathes so much life into the entire storyline, and last 3 episodes of this season are among the best episodes of the show's entire run. My personal opinion, of course.

Lalo just breathes so much life into the entire storyline, and last 3 episodes of this season are among the best episodes of the show's entire run. My personal opinion, of course. That’s true. Towards the end it picked up – it was in the middle of the season that I wasn’t – I don’t want to say “not enjoying it very much” because that is not true, so I’ll say “enjoying it less than usual” instead. The whole thing with Kim and the guy who didn’t want to leave his home and her ambivalent attitude annoyed me a little bit. Plus Jimmy being an asshole for no good reason.
