Meh... Zack Snyder almost always makes great trailers. The movies almost always disappoint after. This one has his the requisite hot shirtless dude flexing their muscles in slo-mo, and he's showing off all that unrealistic looking CGI he's using all the time. But, I do think it's funny that Tig Notaro is in it, and it does actually look like he's making something he thinks will he fun. He's better off doing something silly and dumb on purpose. He gets into more trouble when he thinks he being profound (although he failed at both when making Sucker Punch). The trailer is perfectly decent, but it's rigidly formulaic for trailers today. The music choices play like a parody of blockbuster movie trailers. Disagree on Snyder's trailers. I think they're always honest, but I don't think they're great. You could tell Sucker Punch, BvS and the Snyder Cut were going to be garbage from the trailers. Visually impressive but a total mess storywise. Army of the Dead feels like the ultimate Snyder movie, which is a frightening thought. Like you said, he gets into trouble when he tries to think. Doesn't look like much thought is necessary for this one. Snyder can't do proper characterization to save his life, but I don't need it for this movie to do its job. Parodies wish they could nail the tone (as well as the premise) of the flick as well as their song choice did here. It just entertains the hell out of me. It's got the 'getting the team together for one last job' thing going for it and an appearance by a zombie Elvis impersonator. Ticket sold. I know Snyder is a hack; wild visuals, shouting, and mindless killing are what he does best. I still love 300. The movie will probably suck. But for my money this trailer is a ridiculous home run. I must've watched that Watchmen trailer 100 times when that came out. It was one of the most disappointing theater experiences I've ever had. It's true that the first Batman vs Superman trailer was pretty terrible and concerned everyone. But by and large his stuff works better in the short form. He can show some broad ideas and some absurd images and doesn't have to get into displaying pesky things like acting, characters, plot, or logic. This does look fun and I'm certainly gonna be watching it, but I just can't possibly hear another old song with too much reverb to make it a little ironically dramatic that goes silent once or twice to highlight a oneliner that they add obnoxious bombastic drums to that builds and builds as the editing strobes til you hit that bass and drum crescendo and the chorus of the song plays over the title. It's just that it's in every fucking trailer and I can't see them without noting how annoying it is that they all adhere to that formula. Maybe it's my fault for continuing to watch trailers when I know they annoy me.

Guys, have we talked about Army of the Dead yet? Headed to see it on Friday. No idea if the movie will be any good, but this has to be a top ten trailer of all time for me. Is it a theatrical release, or direct to Netflix? Either way, I will be watching it very soon. Both. I got tickets to see it in the theater in my area, but it'll also be on Netflix.

Maybe it's my fault for continuing to watch trailers when I know they annoy me. Yeah I don't disagree with you about the state of trailers in general, I just think they nailed it with this one. Though in all honesty, I'm a sucker for that trick. The trailer for The Big Short uses my favorite song of all time (When The Levee Breaks), so I almost have to love that trailer. Good thing I ended up loving the movie, too. To be clear, by no means do I expect this movie to be as enjoyable as I found the trailer. I'm betting on the slim hope that it's at least half as entertaining as what was promised in the trailer. Really, that's all you can do with any trailer. Regarding Snyder, his eye for cinematography is incredible; too bad he can't write characters or coherent stories to save his life. You listen to him talk and he sounds like a 15 year old trapped in an adult's body. After seeing this trailer it occurred to me that Suicide Squad would've been the perfect property for him to adapt, instead of think pieces like Watchmen or epic sagas featuring the most iconic superheroes of all time. He's in over his head with that stuff. Give him a band of misfits and give me a bucket of popcorn. Considering the death of his daughter by suicide, that's clearly never going to happen. This might be the closest thing we get. Circling back to trailers, I consider it an art form almost unto itself. There are plenty of great trailers for movies that were average, or flat out terrible. I still love the trailers as a glimpse of what might have been. On the other hand, plenty of my favorite films had relatively generic trailers. It's a rare feat for a trailer to capture the quality of the film, one way or the other.

It doesn't appear in the "Upcoming Releases" of the site I use for movie showtimes, but the site hasn't been very reliable since the pandemic started. Hopefully it will get a theatrical release here - it does look like the kind of movie that has to be seen on the big screen.

But I'm with you on trailers as a form. I think that's why I keep watching them even while so many are obnoxious and the transparency of the formula bothers me. I'm not quite as taken with Zack Snyder's visual style. It always looks phony to me, the ramped up-slow mo in the same shot thing was novel 15 years ago but just annoys me now, and I don't really like how he dulls the color pallette... but he clearly has his moments (and as much as I don't care for the movie overall, some of those quieter moments in middle section of Man of Steel where he's trying to channel Terrence Malick show that he could have some range if he chose to), and this kind of silliness clearly suits him much better.

I am starting to watch Ozark, after a friend highly recommended it. Only two episodes in, but I like it so far. Jason Bateman goes into uncharted territory, exchanging comedy for crime drama.
Has anyone seen it? There are three 10-episode seasons on Netflix, with a fourth one apparently on the way.

The first season is fantastic. The second season is fermented garbage. The third season is, overall, pretty good, but never quite reaches the heights of the first season. Jason Bateman is excellent throughout. I'll reserve the balance of my thoughts until you're finished to avoid spoiler-y talk.

I had interest but never got around to it based on comments I saw you make elsewhere on the board. My wife ended up watching it and I said, "I heard (your thoughts, specifically on a certain character) about it," and she agreed with your take. I like Bateman a lot but I'll probably never get to it at this point, especially since I only really watch tv at night with her, and she's already seen it.

Stop speaking to that person at once and remove them from your life completely.

While the first season is, by far, the best of the 3 thus far, it doesn't really come close to either Breaking Bad or Sopranos, in my humble opinion.

My wife gets home from work earlier than me so she ends up watching stuff without me so I never caught up with it. Although I'll be traveling next week for the first time in forever and that might be a good plane watch for me. Or I could catch up with Peaky Blinders before it comes back for the last season. Or movies...or I could read... I guess I'll never watch this show.

Too funny you guys are having this discussion as I'm binge watching the Sopranos again right now as I type
I'm on Season 3 Episode 1
Great show but some of the episodes don't hold up for me and are rather cringe worthy
*** Spoilers Below ***
Love the character Christopher; however the episodes that have revolved around him - i.e. his Music Producing Career and then his failed Movie Writer episode were rather cringe worthy for my own personal tastes I literally cannot stand the scenes with Tony's shrink as well - other than - great show
Loved Ozark - can't wait for Season 4. Loved the scenery, atmosphere and musical score/soundtrack and found myself rooting for Bateman and the character Ruth, and despising the wife
I go out of the BB, Sopranos, Ozark
1. Breaking Bad 2. Ozark 3. Sopranos (and that's no slight to The Sopranos)

Have you seen The Outsider on HBO? It's a series based on a Stephen King novel done with a pretty stark crime/detective kinda tone. Jason Bateman acts in it as well as directs the first few episodes. He's really stepping into something different there and while though show doesn't finish as strong as it starts, he's quite good in front of and behind the camera.

You nailed the description of that show. The first handful of episodes, holy shit I was totally hooked. It didn't hold up but overall, you're spot about Bateman. It looked great, had the most palpable sense of dread I've seen in quite some time and the performances were mostly really good, in spite of the shows hiccups in the back half.

The only thing that ever really bothered me about Sopranos was when they would whine about the stereotypes of Italians. There's one episode (S4E3) called Columbus, or maybe it's Christopher Columbus(?) and it's mostly a bottle episode devoted to arguing about the sanctity of Columbus Day and what it really means to Italians, to Native Americans, and to this country as a whole. It's a garbage episode. Not because what they're saying is totally off-base, or whatever, but it just doesn't fit into the show at all.

Loved the character relationships for the most part and Ben Mendelsohn is really terrific, speech impediment and all. In typical, almost cliche Stephen King fashion the characters are full and compelling and the setup is tremendous and then the resolution is ultimately a little unworthy of how well things were executed prior to that... but it still makes for an overall worthwhile experience. I think they're planning on doing another season carrying on with the Holly Gibney character since she's a recurring character in multiple novels, but I also understand that she's been altered from her personality in the books, but I can't claim to know too much about that. Maybe I'll pick up one of them for the plane.

God, I know that feeling... so many titles I've been meaning to get to. This is partly why I don't get into many series. It's such a time commitment to invest 10 hours into a story when I could watch around 4 or more films in that period of time. Plus, I don't think most of these shows justify their runtime... especially the 'limited series.' For the most part I think they could usually be cut down into a interesting 2 or 3 hours movies. I'll never understand why people bemoan a 3 hour movie but will watch a 12 hour series in one sitting binge session.
