Cowherd just reminded me 'Hard Knocks' aired last night Completely forgot - going to watch now - S16 Episode 1 8/10/21 - 'Head coach Mike McCarthy welcomes an intriguing mix of established veterans and highly regarded rookie hopefuls; as training camp begins, all eyes are on Dak Prescott, who suffered a compound right ankle fracture and dislocation last season.' Cowherd just blasted McCarthy for coming up phony - i.e. his enthusiasm seems forced and fake Let's Give It A Whirl

Planning to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel tonight. Anyone who liked it? (it would be my first watch). I watched it and enjoyed it well enough, but it’s not a film I’m likely to watch again. It does have a lot of fans though.

Low budget and a bit far fetched but the acting was good and I liked the small town Minnesota location. The undertaker parlour setting was novel!

I thought it was a pretty cool little movie for most of the runtime, and I identified that very authentic 16mm cinematography immediately which I thought lended a great look and a youthful and authetnic energy, and I thought the performances were good... But I don't think that ending really worked for me. Hard left turn.

Just noticed that this thread is now longer than the "What Are You Listening to" one!
It’s that time of the year again – Fantasia Film Festival! The yearly film festival here in Montreal that’s a showcase for horror, thriller, action and fantastic movies from all over the world but especially Asia. Like last year, this year’s edition is online. I plan to watch between 20 and 30 movies in the three weeks of duration of the festival, most from Japan and Korea but also from countries as varied as Uruguay, New Zealand and Estonia. Some of the movies I’ve seen so far: Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes: a wildly inventive movie from Japan where the protagonist discovers that through the computer in his apartment he can talk to himself from two minutes in the future in a monitor in the downstairs café. Hotel Poseidon: Belgian movie somewhat reminiscent of Aronofsky’s Mother but much crazier and more often than not quite unpleasant to watch. In hindsight I wish I had turned it off after 30 minutes and watched something else. The 12-Day Tale of the Monster that Died in 8: zany Japanese movie that takes place during the pandemic. As Japan is in lockdown, an unemployed actor buys a “seed” of a Kaiju, a monster like the ones from Godzilla movies or from Ultraman and Ultraseven TV shows, in the hopes that when it grows up it will help defeat COVID. In the universe of the movie, those monsters and aliens are real and used to appear regularly on Earth, and especially in Japan. The entire movie is a series of Zoom calls with his friends where he discusses his disappointment that his “monsters” are not growing much, his Live sessions showing the progress, and videos that he watches of other people trying to raise monsters and aliens. Crazy stuff that could not possibly come from any country other than Japan.

I watched the Malice at the Palace documentary on Netflix last night. Basically a deep dive into the incident that we have all seen a thousand times by now. It doesn't have the same sense of storytelling that the excellent Last Dance had, and there is a lot of extraneous stuff they could have left on the cutting room floor.
What makes it worth watching though is that they have in depth interviews with each of Reggie Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Stephen Jackson and Ron Artest and they all try to give their side of the story, with a bit more background as to the events that preceded the incident. It doesn't try to absolve them, which is good (because they don't deserve absolution), but it does put a bit more of the blame on the fans than the NBA wanted to at the time, which is good. There is one fan in particular who is seen, on video, doing something insanely stupid, and then tries to claim that he was an innocent victim in the whole thing. Fuck off. Jackson is the hero of this documentary though. His interviews are worth the entire watch.

I don't feel like it's necessary because I always felt the fans were to blame for the most part. Also I've always hated Ron Artest, so I don't really want to hear his opinion on anything. He was an ass long before that brawl.

So...Friday the 13th and no mention of a Friday the 13th marathon, frogs? Even a few essential installments of the franchise?
