Watched Blade Runner for its 40th anniversary and its sequel. The original is textbook sci-fi noir, and while I have grown to appreciate it more over the years, I still find it somewhat overrated. 2049, on the other hand, is underrated and a great sequel even though it could’ve been a good 20-30 minutes shorter.

The original is one of those rare ones that I watch annually (along with Jaws and Alien) as its one of my favorites. I know a lot of people who find it to be overrated or even tedious at times. I get it, I'm just a huge sucker for everything this movie offers. 2049 is an unsung masterpiece. Totally agree with you there, even if the run time is a pinch bloated.

I'm of the opposite opinion. Blade Runner is my favorite film while I find the sequel tedious and completely unnecessary. On its own, 2049 would be a brilliant looking, poorly written movie. But as a sequel to Blade Runner, it's downright nonsensical. I was thinking about doing a write up of BR in this thread, but I think I've talked it to death on this board (and film general) and I'd only be repeating myself. Still might do it, we'll see. Good to see your appreciation has grown over the years. As I've brought up before, I fell asleep in the theater the first time I saw it (Director's Cut in the theater in 1992, I was 15), and now it's my favorite movie. Go figure.

It's vintage Michael Bay ridiculousness, but it's fun. Deep Impact is a legitimately great movie on the same topic that came out the same year. It's not perfect by any means, but I really enjoy it in a sincere way as opposed to my appreciation for the goofiness of Armageddon.

Watched The Super Bob Einstein Movie last night. I'm not going to say it was a great documentary (watching Patton Oswalt and Sarah Silverman watch Bob Einstein clips and just laughing about the scene does not make for a great documentary), but seeing the clips for myself was a good time. Not so much Super Dave which I can only get so far with, but the Curb clips and talk show clips (jokes about not swearing and a furor/Fuhrer misunderstanding were laugh-out loud funny) were worth the time of watching it. Also interesting to see his relationship to his older brother and younger brother, Albert Brooks.

I do have some problem with original, though I do appreciate it more at each viewing. I never get the night time throughout like in Dark City. The movie do get campy at time. The stand off between Deckard and Roy Batty was a bit underwhelming. However, no one can argue with the awesome setting.
The sequel is one of the best movie of this century. Not only it kept the style of the original, but without being campy. Outstanding mystery. Ryan Gosling fit the character to the tee. The Ana de Armas character is one of the most interesting in Sci-Fi movie. Only thing is that it really does not need to be nearly 3 hours.

Great casting. I saw it a few times already. Very rewatchable.

Last night I watched "One of Our Aircraft Is Missing", a 1942 war movie by the British duo Powell and Pressburger. A bomber returning from a mission is shot down over occupied Netherlands. Fortunately the crew manages to bail out safely, but in order to evade capture and return to Britain they will need to rely on the help from ordinary Dutch civilians.
It's a decent war movie on its own merits but of course what makes it extra interesting is the fact that it was made as the war was raging.

“Official Competition” (Spain-Argentina 2021)
Directed by the Argentinian duo Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, who also made “The Distinguished Citizen” in 2016. Presumably with the (relative) success of that movie, doors were opened for them to make this “bigger” film with international stars Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.
It’s a satirical look at the film industry. A wealthy industrialist with no previous involvement in the business decides to produce a film just for the prestige. He buys the rights to a novel by a Nobel Prize winner, hires an award-winning director (Penelope Cruz) to adapt it, and tells her to get “the best actors” to star in it. She hires two actors with diametrically opposed attitudes towards the craft (Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez). Then the three get together for rehearsals, and the conflicts start. It is very funny in its (obviously exaggerated) depiction of movie types – the phoniness, the inflated egos, the pretentiousness.
Highly recommended to anyone who likes movies about making movies and doesn’t balk at reading subtitles. I saw it on the big screen, but I suppose it won’t get a very wide distribution outside major cities. Hopefully it will come to a streaming service at some point.
I also started watching “Money Heist: Korea” the Korean remake of the international hit from Spain “La Casa de Papel”, about a group of “good” criminals attempting to pull off the heist of the century – taking over the Mint and making off with a fortune in newly-printed bills. The original was great fun (although arguably it didn’t have to last as long as it did) and the Korean version looks pretty good so far – which of course should come as no surprise to anyone who’s familiar with Korean movies and TV shows. It's on Netflix.
