Been a while since I posted in this thread.
Over the last month or so, I rewatched the first 6 Resident Evil movies that spanned from 2002-2016. I’d watched the first 4, but not the last 2. As you surely know, they are very bad. If they were B movies/indies/minor budget/unknown they might’ve been ok, but considering they’re supposed to be big budget Hollywood flicks, they’re just brutal.
I also watched the new Thor when it was released on Disney+. I was hesitant to watch it in theaters, and I can safely say it was the right move to wait. It wasn’t as bad I heard but it wasn’t very great. Christian Bale was great as he usually is but his character felt out of place. The villain should usually be more serious than the rest of the movie, but it felt they could’ve dialed it back a notch and almost felt like a parody at times. Between this and all the tv shows I’m starting to wonder if the MCU is starting to run out of gas and starting to feel stale.

This 'MOVIES!' channel has some old school gems on it... On right now - 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' (1941) - 'Gentle Dr. Jekyll (Spencer Tracy) tests a serum on himself, releasing vicious alter-ego Mr. Hyde on 19th-century London.' Have the book sitting around collecting dust - need to read it. Let's Give It A Whirl!

I didn't get around to it last night but I'm planning on taking this opportunity to remove Rings (2017) from my ever-growing list of movie recordings by watching it soon. The Japanese original and its 2002 American remake are among my favorite horror films of all time. How bad can this one be?

The new Thor struck me as the Moonraker (that's James Bond, folks) of the MCU in that it simply couldn't decide on a consistent tone. I liked Ragnarok but this one was relentlessly crammed so full of gags it got a little distracting. The last straw was when Valkyrie (right?) was showing Jane the equipment she'd be taking to their upcoming excursion. "A hand grenade?" "No. A music player." Then she switched on the tune and they both started bopping away. What? There were little jokes like this almost every five seconds; it legitimately felt like a parody at times. Plus the entire movie felt like Taika Waititi was telling us how big a Guns N' Roses fan he is. Three different GNR songs on the soundtrack? AND a kid who calls himself "Slash" after discovering GNR? With a huge GNR poster on his bedroom wall? Then the ending goes for super profundity. They really didn't get the balance right, tonally. Also, Natalie Portman just shows up in Asgard and becomes a Thor? How? Zero explanation unless I missed it.

Having said that, if it were up to me Taika Waititi wouldn't get a job catering in a Marvel movie, let alone writing and directing one again. And I like the guy's other movies!

I finished watching season 5 of Cobra Kai. I had LOVED all previous seasons (yes, even the teen drama) and binge-watched each of them in record time. This last one was still enjoyable, but not nearly to the same extent. My main problem with it was that the conflict and the villain's motivations felt very forced, unlike previous seasons where it all flowed naturally.
I also went to see Avatar on IMAX 3D yesterday. Say what you want about the story, it is a freaking spectacular movie!

Say what you want about the story, it is a freaking spectacular movie! Yeah, I still watch the show, although I feel like each season has gotten progressively less enjoyable. It's still a decent enough watch - simple, mindless fun (perfect for long plane rides) - but you're right in that it gets forced. That's been my issue with it since the incredible season 1. The constant side-switching at a moment's notice, and the villains this season were like Bond villains, and their motivations have become too asinine, to the point of this basically being a live action cartoon. Still like seeing my girl Courtney Henggeler though being the voice of reason! Also, Sam LaRusso is the WORST!! She's always been the worst, but this season, she fucking breaks up with Miguel, then has the audacity to get upset when he is with another girl, and even he very graciously confronts her about it and apologizes, she doesn't "forgive" him for a few days. Then Tori tries to explain herself and apologize, and she just continuously is nasty to her, and this is after ruining her job. Ugh, she is the absolute worst. I would love it if she got kicked in the teeth. I'm very curious about Avatar. Ideally, I'd see it in theaters, if at all, although I'm not really gunning to go catch it.

As they should! Especially 4. That's the sweet spot for me. It's atmospheric and pretty well made and just dumb enough to not take as seriously as the first one, but not so absurd to be ridiculous like the latter sequels. And Danielle Harris gives a very impressive child performance. I always thought she deserved better roles as she got older. She's a legitimately good actress.

Which sequel has the cops walking around with bizarre clown music playing? I feel like it’s 5 but not positive. It is indeed 5. There are literally slide whistles and bicycle horns on the soundtrack when they show up. So fucking weird. The story goes that the composer was told to make the music 'funny' or write 'comedy music' or something, and the French director didn't speak great English so he didn't give much more direction than that, so the composer made the silliest and most ridiculous choice he could assuming that he would be told to tone it down, but they just ended up using it. It might be the most absurd thing in a movie full of completely ludicrous elements including Michael Myers who had been shot a billion times just simply sleeping next to a homeless man for a year before waking up in time for the next year's Halloween. It's kind of fun to watch because it's so fucking stupid, and it has some good moments.. and Danielle Harris is good again and gives a better performance than the movie deserves.

One of my favorite sequels in any horror franchise.
Usually in a lot of slashers, I'm rooting for the iconic antagonists - Jason, Freddy, Pinhead, Michael, Chucky, etc to knock the annoying teens off
What makes a movie good for me, is when you become somewhat invested in the characters, and find yourself rooting for them to survive - which I did with H4
One of the few slashers I can watch repeatedly when it's on.
