thegoldenhornblog.blogspot.com/2024/04/no-way-out-1987.htmlNo Way Out (1987) Directed by Roger Donaldson. Found on Tubi. Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Sean Young. From the book The Big Clock. This is a good thriller. Some people don't like the twist. The black and white The Big Clock is also a good thriller. I think that's the movie that features one of the all time great background lines ever. They're kissing before she gets into a cab, and a cop walks up and tells them to move along, and the cab driver goes, "Ok, asshole." It's low key one of my favorite movie lines ever, because it has no reason to exist. Yep, and the cop doesn't beat him about the head or anything.

thegoldenhornblog.blogspot.com/2024/04/the-big-clock-1948.htmlThe Big Clock (1948) Directed by John Farrow. Ray Milland, Charles Laughton. When I watched this Blu-ray several years ago there was a scene in Charles Laughton's office that was so perfectly composed that I watched Laughton's feet to see if there was a mark on the floor. When he moved his feet there were two marks, one for each foot. The office set was built so that all the walls could be removed and then they could get in there to do all the fancy camera moves. I have The Big Clock on tap for this evening after watching No Way Out earlier in the week. I picked four movies on Tubi basically at random, all 80s movies, and three out of four had George Dzundza in it. No Mercy, No Way Out, and No Man's Land.

X-Men 97 which is a revival and continuation of the X-Men animated series from my childhood. They are 5 episodes in and it has been fantastic. Better than I ever imagined. The animation is great, the voice actors amazing, fight sequences and visual usage of powers top notch. The original was made for kids obviously and they famously used the robot Sentinels as villains because they couldn't show blood and were handicapped on what Wolverine could do as with no blood couldn't go about having him stab people so dismembering robots was the work around. Now with this revival there has been no such issue with showing blood which has caught me off guard. It seems while this show is made for all ages it tends to feel like it is really grown with its original audience and as they have matured so has what this show has shown. This latest episode was beyond fantastic and emotional. There was so much going on with love triangles and great dialogue that really made an impact. Some of the best portrayals and usage of characters like Gambit, Rogue, Cyclops, and Jean who have never really been great in the films. While Magneto has been mostly great in the films he was also amazing here with this seemingly redemptive arch. The emotion and flash backs to the holocaust while used frequently in the films still hit the heart strings here. It was so action packed that I wish it was either a 2 parter or just went for a whole hour to stretch out the drama a bit. That said, it was still fantastic and the best thing Marvel has done since Infinity War imo. The end of the episode without spoiling anything was like a gut punch while rewarding for certain characters at the same time. Spoiler Warning The rest of the X-Men watching the news break about the destruction while Cyclops yelled "how many?" Really gave 9/11 vibes. With the episode fading to black as Rogue cries "I can't feel you" as she is finally able to touch Gambit but it being too late. Him never knowing that she chose him in the end. Going back to the final line Xavier gave to Gambit in the original finale of the series "how many times do you have to show yourself a hero before you believe it yourself?" Just adds more emotion to his sacrifice. Just top notch stuff.

I wasn't a huge X-Men fan, but your write-up makes me want to check it out. Do you think it's still watchable if you haven't seen the original series?

It has some call backs to the original as the story picks up from where it left off but nothing so far that would make any of it a must watch to understand. All you really need to know is that they're mutants trying to survive in a world where humans discriminate and hate them. There has yet to be an episode where I needed to know everything that happened prior. They make references but they feel mostly like Easter eggs. I mean I haven't watched the 90s cartoon since I was a kid so its not like these stories are fresh in my memory. They do a good enough job of walking you through anything you might not remember. This latest episode really gave me Game of Thrones episode right before season finale vibes. Idk if you watched that or not but they always had huge episodes take place right before the finale. X-Men 97 still has i think 5 episodes left this season. Another GOT reminder is the opening credits change per each episode to give you hints as to who are in each episode.

Watch the new Civil War movie last night. Not amazing or anything, but it was better than I expected, although I was a bit disappointed it focused more on the journalists covering it than the actual conflict itself.
I watched the 2 Captain Marvel movies. It was the first time I watched the first since it was in theaters 5 (!) years ago and I liked it maybe less compared to the first time? Not bad but weaker than a lot of the pre-Endgame stuff.
...which brings me to the sequel, The Marvels.
........
I don't have a very high bar for movies, I've noticed about myself. I've liked a lot of stuff that people in this thread haven't, but there's no 2 ways about it. This movie sucked. Arguably the worst the MCU has ever done. I thought its short runtime would help, and while it didn't hurt, it sure as shit didn't help. It's been 5 years now since Endgame and the MCU hasn't even come close to recapturing the success it had from 2008-2019. Avengers Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are going to be all time bombs, the polar opposites of what the MCU used to be, if this keeps up.

I was very into this show when I was a kid, but I don't remember much about the stories. I remember the look, the music, the voices, the characterizations, and some of the basic plot elements, but I didn't really remember where it left off until I saw the trailer for the new one, so this reassures me that I can just jump right in and not have to rewatch any of the previous episodes. I never watched Game of Thrones (I got my fix of dragons from straight to dvd dragon heart sequels), but I'm happy to hear they're taking big swings. I remember that show being kinda soapy.

Haven't watched The Marvels but I'm now more curious based on this. I always kinda thought of Endgame is sort of a series finale and everything that followed as sort of a spinoffs of that series. I've checked in here and there, but haven't fully kept up with it after that, and everything feels pretty lightweight and minor by comparison. Even the good stuff.

It really surprised me how good and stand alone it is. Sure its a continued story in a sense from the original finale but it truly stands on its own as its own show. Being TV14 as well caught me off guard as well making it far more mature than what you'd watch on Fox Saturday morning cartoons. Things impact a viewer harder if they know these characters but its not a must watch the original cartoon to follow. Its far better imo than it really had any expectations to be.

I am tackling the 3 Body Problem, a new science fiction show on Netflix, based on the eponymous book by Chinese author Cixin Liu. The book had been on my radar since it became a worldwide success a few years ago but only now with the release of the TV show did I finally get around to reading it. I enjoyed it well enough so next step is watching the show. First episode (of eight) was pretty good.

I still really have no idea what it's about. It's an odd title, that's for sure.

I'm 4 episodes in, I find it just intriguing enough to keep going but I find it to be a bit of a slog after a very promising first episode. I'm hoping the back half of the series is more interesting.

If it follows the book, it is going to get REALLY weird! Still haven't looked at this yet, but was just searching the title on IMDb and saw that this seems to be the third adaptation of this book. There were two TV series, one animated the other live action, in China within only the last 2 or 3 years. Interesting, since Asian series have done very well on Netflix in recent years that they chose to essentially remake it instead. I imagine they felt like they'd pump more money into it and get more attention that way, but I wonder if the original shows were well liked, or if this is a way to improve upon what came before for fans.

I knew about the Chinese live action series but not the animated one. The book takes place almost entirely in China, in two periods, the present and the 60s/70s. Netflix kept the past in China (spoken in Chinese) but moved the present-day parts to England. I am sure language was a big part of that decision. The book is actually the first part of a trilogy. My understanding is that season 1 covers just the first book, and that they hope to continue into the second and third installments. I don't know if the Chinese series covers the entire trilogy or just the first volume.

You know what would make for a funny sequel to Cast Away? Him trying to secure a car loan or rent an apartment after getting back. Having been gone for 4 years, and legally declared dead, he has no "recent payment history" so his credit would be in the shitter. Even faced with a logical explanation, credit reporting agencies are some of the most myopic people on the planet. No way in hell FexEx is footing the bill. Although I guess if it took place today, he could launch a GoFundMe and do pretty well.
