Got Amazon Prime free for a week. Ana de Armas double bill today: Knives Out: 6.5/10. It was entertaining enough but I was expecting better. Blade Runner 2049: half way through it. Ana is absolutely smoking in this. Decent enough so far. Yeah I was disappointed by Knives Out. Don't get me going on the failures of Blade Runner 2049.

Not anywhere near as good as the original. Tbh I only watched it to see Ana de Armas.

Tbh I only watched it to see Ana de Armas. Blade Runner is my favorite film so of course it had a lot to live up to, and I could go into specifics for hours but I won't waste your time. As a film, 2049 is alright but as a sequel to the original it's a mess. It feels like they wanted to remake the original but didn't have the balls, so basically just rehashed the same elements into a watered down, unnecessary sequel. It's visually stunning at times, but storywise it falls flat.

I really liked Knives Out, but admittedly one of the things I enjoyed about it was the fact that it was a dying breed - a prestige picture. A non-franchise, non-comic book, actor-driven comedy meant as nothing more than a pleasant diversion. There were years when movies like this littered the theaters. Now, we're lucky if we get one per year per studio.

Breaker Morant (1980) , an Australian war/courtroom drama about three Australian soldiers court-martialed by the British during the Boer War for executing prisoners of war - which they claimed they only did on unwritten orders from the higher-ups. A very solid drama.

Identity (2003) - John Cusack, Ray Liotta serial killer film about a group of strangers forced to spend the night together in a motel in the middle of nowhere because of flooded roads. Good fun. Also for your consideration: Official Secrets (2019) - drama doc about real-life Iraq War whistle-blower Katharine Gun. Nicely made with good performances from Keira Knightley, Rhys Ifans and Ralph Fiennes. Don't Move (2004) - A destitute woman (Penelope Cruz) is raped by a rich, married surgeon. They go on to have a long, complicated affair. Cruz is great.

The Hot Spot (1990), directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly. A neo-noir of sorts about a newcomer to a small Texas town who gets a job as an used car salesman and promptly gets involved with his new boss’ scheming wife (a stunning Virginia Madsen) and also with his young co-worker (an equally stunning Jennifer Connelly), who has some secrets of her own. If I were a perv I would probably mention that both female stars appear naked, but since I am not, I won’t. I remember watching it when it came out and liking it a lot. I don’t think I had watched it again since then. It holds up pretty well. The soundtrack is great – I own it on CD and still listen to it regularly.

Watched Peter Watkins's Punishment Park (1971) last night. It was never distributed in the United States. I'm glad I watched it, and I'm sure it was more revolutionary during its time. In 2020, the characters (seemingly all played by actors who never were in anything else ever again - - of the four I looked up on IMDb, Punishment Park was their only credit) are one dimensional and the plot very predictable. Still, it's amazing that films like this were made back then, and that in itself made it worthy of watching.
