Your take is dead on. It's an awful movie by modern standards. But I love it, I can't help it. You will never see a movie like that made again, and it was aimed at children! Kids making gay jokes, spying on high school girls changing, making bullets in shop class, middle schoolers smoking cigarettes; at one point Dracula holds up a 3 year old girl by the face and calls her a bitch! The fat shaming is literally the least offensive thing in the film. I keep wondering how old my son will be before I let him watch it, but I'm dreading him asking what a 'f-ggot' is. By 2020 social standards the film is basically unwatchable.
All that said, that movie was my childhood. That's what we did, rode around looking for monsters, making forts, weapons and traps, etc. Some of us still help in the fight against monsters, I can't imagine growing up any other way.
klawrencio79 Expanding on our previous conversation... Expanding on our previous conversation...Watched this again the other night, it still cracks me up. I own the DVD, but I was lazy so I just found it on demand. It was on Sundance, and they edited out most of the harsh language (though they kept in Dracula calling 5 year old Phoebe a bitch, which was great.) Fun fact: In the IMDb trivia, it says a poll in Wizard magazine in 2006 named this version of Dracula the #30 movie villain of all time, outranking all other film versions. That says more about the film watching habits of people taking a poll in Wizard magazine than anything else, but I thought it was fun trivia. He does have a bitchin' hot rod and some great lines. You can nitpick the film to death storywise, continuity wise, plot logic wise, but one scene always stands out as unintentionally hilarious to me. When they get that picture of Patrick's sister changing, Frankenstein's monster is looking at it, and all the kids are jumping and trying to see it-- including Patrick. He wants to see his own sister naked? Also none of them except Rudy, who is a couple years older, are into girls yet; they even have a sign on the clubhouse that says no girls allowed. So I'm not sure why any of them would care. Of course, in a movie where the army shows up because an 8 year old sent them a letter telling them there are monsters, anything goes. A movie has to be great when it closes with a character saying the title of the film. This flick is so 80s it hurts, in the best ways. Corny, but delightfully so, and somehow edgier than any kids movie ever will be again. Ah, the 80s. This is awesome, and it makes me want to re-watch it tonight after putting myself in a sunnier mood. I think I just had a bad day the last time I watched it.

There was a thread recently with a list of the best feel-good movies of the century so far. One of the movies on the list was Chef (2014), which Jon Favreau wrote, directed and starred in. It sounded like something I might enjoy and it was available on Netflix, so I gave it a try. Good choice for a late Sunday afternoon. It is indeed “feel-good”, and the food looked amazing.
I have also finished season 4 of “The Sopranos”. Two more to go. Great show – I can’t believe it took me so long to finally watch it. But before I start on season 5, I decided to take a break and watch the miniseries “The Five”, based on a Harlan Coben story. For those who don’t know him, Harlan Coben is a mystery writer who always writes the same book, but damn it if the plots aren’t well-crafted and entertaining. There’s always a secret from the past that resurfaces, bringing danger to the protagonist or his family. I watched the first episode (of 10) and it looks good so far.

This movie and A Simple Plan from 1998 are both pretty strong straightforward dramas. The Gift has a the supernatural stuff going on, but Raimi plays his boisterous and wild style down completely and just allows the drama of the script to do the work. It's a pretty good one.

Stephen King's miniseries (2 night event) - Storm of the Century
I enjoyed it.
Would you risk potentially giving up your own child to save numerous?
Nice little eerie/creepy scene at the very end involving The Devil

I remember reading about a family during the great New England Hurricane (we can all claim it, frogs!) of 1938 whose family took in the neighbors' kids because their house was the largest. When it became clear the house may be inundated, they handed out life preservers to the children but didn't have enough. So they gave the life preservers to the neighbors' children because how could you ever look them in the eye if their children drowned while yours survived? Luckily it never came to that and everyone in the house survived. A lot of people in the storm's path weren't so lucky.

So you're telling me there were parents out there that gave life perservers to the neighbors kids instead of their own because there wasn't enough.
How do you ever look your own children in the eyes again
And - when that child grows up - how can you ever look your parent in the eyes again.
I'm sorry - but I'm saving my own child in that situation
Blood is thicker than water - adios neighbors kids.....

We New Englanders are tough, frogs. And we have honor. Hopefully it taught the kids to do the same thing if they were in that situation. Sometimes you have to jump on the grenade.

I actually saw if for the 1st time a few months back - after hearing so much about it - it was free on my cable package - loved it.
I own the first remake - it's buried somewhere in storage - I remember giving it a shot but not finishing it as I was distracted - heard horrible things about it. Heard even more horrible things about the recent remake.

Neither remake is anything like the original, but they are both really awful in completely different ways. Haven't seen the original in years, will likely check it out again in December. The fun trivia that everyone likes to bring up is that Bob Clark directed two diametrically opposed Christmas classics; Black Christmas and A Christmas Story.

Two Mules For Sister Sara (1970) An oddly talkative Clint Eastwood with Shirley MacLaine in this fun Western; his second collaboration with Don Siegel. The Mexican setting and Ennio Morricone's score were the best things about it.

Scary Movie (2000) and Psycho (1960) planned for tonight. The former is a compromise with my wife who doesn’t enjoy horror movies. The latter is just for me.
Both of which I don’t think I’ve ever fully seen from start to finish. I’ve definitely seen portions of Psycho before, and if I have seen any of Scary Movie, I don’t remember.

Mine is the original "The Exorcist" with Linda Blair. My favorite outer space horror movie is the first "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver.

Mine is the original "The Exorcist" with Linda Blair. My favorite outer space horror movie is the first "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver. Cult Movies/Movies about the Devil are the only ones that scare me
The Wicker Man (original) The VVitch Midsommar Heredity Lords of Salem
99% of people won't find these 'scary' per se - I'm a pretty spiritual person - the movies above gave me a real uneasy feel
Scariest that I love and watch over and over? Probably The Blair Witch Project (which a lot of other people don't find scary either)
I enjoyed 'The Exorcist' but I'm one of the few who regards III better - one of my favorite movies.
The Shining and Jaws are two of my favorite movies as well - they terrified me but I'll stick with Blair Witch
Alien is great. I enjoyed III, Alien: Covenant and the AvP movies for kicks
