Man this all sucks.
Iโve seen predictions that many theaters will stay closed for good and we could see this temporary measure become a somewhat regular thing - less showings with less theaters.

Yeah, this is sad. It's been coming for a while now, though: changing technology. Movies and moviegoing have been going through changes since the silent days, and nothing has killed off feature films or going to feature films over the past century, but the writing has been on the wall now for a while. If it wasn't cable television, then DVD's, YouTube, Nextflix and all the rest it would have been the sheer inertia, the accumulation for people seeking mass entertainment Hollywood offered up for literally generations now. It makes a weird sense to me that,--of all freakin' things!--it may well be that Coronavirus has dealt the death blow to the moviegoing habit, though not to the movies themselves. It looks like it's going to be, and may well have to be, turned into home entertainment.

The companies that control Hollywood do not care about movies or theatrical experience. They won't lose money with closures because they will have it subsidized by the taxpayer or some other money laundering scam. I don't think most people want to stay cooped up at home watching tv--public cultural gatherings have been around since ancient times--but there needs to be more enthusiasm for the theater-going experience and Hollywood companies don't provide it. Movies are grease for the machinery at best and social control ads at worst. Unless someone has a 30 foot screen in their home they cannot get the cinema experience. Maybe it is the best thing that can happen because movies cannot re-generate unless the corporations are out of it. But they are selfish and don't want anyone else doing it. Disney shut down revival cinemas showing old Fox films--so that shows there are people who want to see old movies in cinemas and not at home.
