Terence Trent D'Arby changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in 2001, explaining that TTD had died a noble death. The new name came to him in some dreams he had in the mid-90s.
Here is one of his lesser known singles originally released as TTD but for me is as fine as any of them, released in the US in 1993 as a CD promo single yet still managing somehow to reach #5 on the US Rock Chart, and achieved #9 and #16 chart success in the Australian and UK national hit parades.
This live version from a couple of years ago is pretty much faithful to the studio cut if not quite as beefy, and when the chorus vocal kicks in you're thinking, yeah he's still got it.

Prince did that logo bit. Not sure it caught on. Johnny Cougar became John Mellencamp. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. Certainly the most pretentious name in show business. It was supposed to be pronounced "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" for those who would take the time out of their busy schedule to say it. I never liked him in the first place but I have to give him the award for most pretentious stage name.

Prince did that logo bit. Not sure it caught on. Johnny Cougar became John Mellencamp. Or John Mellencamp became John Cougar, gained fame then went by John Cougar Mellencamp, then back to John Mellencamp.

Prince's name change had nothing to do with pretentiousness, it was about his contract dispute with Warner.

Scott Walker reverted to his birth name, briefly.
For his best album Scott 4, it was released under Scott Engel, but it failed to chart, and was deleted.

Not official name change, but Garth Brooks assumed "Chris Gaines" persona briefly.

On advice from his spiritual advisor Muhammed Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, Jim Mcguinn of The Byrds changed his name to Roger Mcguinn because it would better vibrate with the universe.
