I was watching MLB Network and they had a show about the 1979 baseball season. Found this amazing about the 1979 Astros - - nobody on the team had double digit home runs.
C - Alan Ashby - 2 HRs (370 plate appearances) 1B - Cesar Cedeno - 6 HRs (549 pa) 2B - Rafael Landestoy - 0 HRs (319 pa) SS - Craig Reynolds - 0 HRs (616 pa) 3B - Enos Cabell - 6 HRs (630 pa) RF - Jeffrey Leonard - 0 HRs (467 pa) CF - Terry Puhl - 8 HRs (672 pa) LF - Jose Cruz - 9 HRs (636 pa)
The bench had 14 home runs and the pitchers had 4 home runs (two each for JR Richard and Joquin Andujar).
Pete Alonzo had more home runs (53) than the whole 1979 Astros (49).
And yet, that team won 89 games and were 1.5 games out of first place in the NL West.

The park they played their home games in was the size of the Grand Canyon. I think they were built like those Whitey Herzog Cardinals teams - speed and defense.

The joke about the Cardinals back then was whether or not they could beat Roger Maris each year.

I think they were built like those Whitey Herzog Cardinals teams - speed and defense. I miss those kinds of teams... not that I'm old enough to actually remember them. Not that I'd want every team to be that way, but two or three, maybe half a dozen could be fun. Weren't the 2003 or 2004 Twins kind of built like those Cardinals teams?

I loved that ‘82 World Series, a clash of completely opposite ways to put together a team. Harvey’s Wallbangers vs Whitey’s Cardinals.

The joke about the Cardinals back then was whether or not they could beat Roger Maris each year. Same with the awful Mets in I think 1980 when the New York Daily News posted their pace against Roger Maris everyday.

The team leader in strikeouts was Alan Ashby, with 70. Players now can get 70 K's by the beginning of May. 1979 was the era of the throwback to pre lively ball, like the 1910's. Very few mashers, all or or nothing hitters like crowd every roster. George Foster, Dave Kingman, Willie Stargell, Greg Luzinski, Bill Melton. I loved it, other than the plastic grass. Which is the reason that small ball was being played. The Astros signed Nolan Ryan in 1980 and came withing an eyelash of the WS

Clark was on the ‘85 team that lost to the Royals. The team that got Denkingered. Loved the 80s Cards and that 82 Series. Willie McGee was my favorite player. Oh, Don Denkinger. Instant Reply should have gone in then. I remember it so well. I lot of people thought that it was Game 7 but it was in Game 6. MLB made a ghastly blunder in letting Denkinger work home plate in Game 7. He was a huge distraction, throwing out both Cards starter Joaquin Andujar and Whitey Herzog. Like Jim Joyce, Don Denkinger was a good umpire. He wasn't Jerry Meals or Angel Hernandez. At least Joyce owned up to his fuck up.

Would have been 1-0 with 1 out in the 9th of Game 6. Worrell would have had Balboni and Sundberg to get for the Championship. Cards completely collapsed in Game 7, 11-0. They didn't want to be there.

That call took away St. Looie's focus. Herzog, Andujar and all the Cardinals imploded. They should have moved on.

But it's the same stadium Jeff Bagwell hit a ton of home runs in before the new stadium. That would imply that possible Bagwell was juicing? ? I don't believe it. He's in the hall. (he was a juicing POS)
