could he have possibly eclipsed or surpassed Denzel had he not had personal issues and died? seemed like he had all the potential.

Howard Rollins was a very good actor, but he went to television instead of movies. For anyone wanting to see them both in one GREAT movie, please see A Soldier's Story / Norman Jewison (1984). While on that movie, also notice the great acting of Oscar nominee, Adolph Caesar. Great movie from top to bottom..

A Soldier's Story is an example of a movie filled with untapped potential, Caesar, Riley, Rollins Jr. all died before there careers could take off more. Caesar was an accomplished stage actor, but seemed like he could become an amazing character actor.

could he have possibly eclipsed or surpassed Denzel had he not had personal issues and died? seemed like he had all the potential. He had enormous potential. He got great notices and Oscar nom for Ragtime (1981). That's years before Denzel broke out. He certainly looked like he was ready to take the torch from Portier. But then it was three more years until A Soldier's Story. And when he took the role of Virgil Tibbs for TV, he looked paunchy and heading downhill. I always figured his substance abuse problems had gotten the better of him and derailed what might have been a stellar film career.

I recall he was in a clever 80s Twilight Zone about anonymous blue workers who create every second in time as a complete location that has to be built and furnished before living things arrive to occupy the space (before moving on to the next location which has also been constructed by the same blue workers).

I thought he was great in Ragtime. OJ Simpson tried to get that role, but Forman went with Rollins. I can't even imagine OJ as Coalhouse Walker.

I remember that, cool episode. Though it's every minute, not second that has to be built. A Matter of Minutes

It's quite possible. He was very good in both Ragtime and A Soldier's Story.

Don't forget by the time Night started he was well into alcohol and Heroin abuse as well.

If I recall he actually got fired after being arrested 4 instances.
