“The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25PM at the age of 81,” his rep said. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family. The family is planning a small private service at this time out of concern for the national COVID-19 emergency. They look forward to celebrating Kenny’s life publicly with his friends and fans at a later date. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/kenny-rogers-dead-obituary-200706/

With him being the newest person to go forward, this song will make you bawl your eyes out more than it already may have.
God bless you and his circle of family and friends always!!!

From 1968. The first song from him I heard. It was written by Mickey Newbury as a warning against using LSD.
R.I.P.

"Yeah, yeah, oooooooh yeah"
When Rogers got huge with The Gambler, I told people that the singer here was THAT Kenny Rogers. People threw things at me.
Song first recorded by... Jerry Lee Lewis

Haha! Yeah, I had originally thought of him as Pop/Rock because that song fits into the counterculture. Then some years later he was popular in the Country genre.

RIP Kenny Rogers!
All of the "First Album You Owned" posts, I tended to gloss over the fact that my actual first album was Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits (1980). My folks bought me a boombox for Christmas in 1980, and included that on cassette.
Well it is actually a tie between this and Neil Diamond's The Jazz Singer Soundtrack.

Most of the c/w fans I knew wouldn't believe that a Nashville icon would sing a "druggie" song. Never mind the fact that Just Dropped In is anti-LSD. Many fans and many in the industry took a dim view of Rock. Like then the Byrds released Sweetheart of the Rodeo. A legit c/w "roots" album and one of the most influential records in Country Rock. But the Byrds were ridiculed by Nashville.
