I'm re-watching "Surprise" and it occurred to me - if the Kalderash clan sent Jenny to monitor Angel, wouldn't it be likely they've had people watching him since the day he was cursed? I mean otherwise, why now? Why only when he moved to Sunnydale? They didn't know about Buffy, since Jenny was the one to inform her uncle about Buffy's involvement with Angel. Admittedly she doesn't refer to Buffy by name or mentioned "the Slayer," but I think it stands to reason had the Slayer's presence been a factor in them only just then putting eyes on him, that would have been a detail worth elaborating on. If Enyos and the rest of their people already knew about the Slayer's presence and that she played any sort of role in Angel's life, Jenny wouldn't have only said, "there's a girl," she would have arguably said something to the effect of, "it's the Slayer," or "it's as we feared, he and the Slayer have gotten closer." But as it stands, the fact that Angel's pain was lessening was news Enyos came to investigate and inform Jenny about; so neither that nor Buffy are why she was there in the first place.
It's kind of shame they didn't explore afterwards, it would have been interesting to see how those sort of undercover agents of the Kalderash might have factored into his life before Sunnydale; explore when Jenny might have taken on that role and find out whether they were still watching him after everything went down with Angelus killing Enyos and Jenny or when he came back from hell.

stargazer1682 ~ I haven't been on here in ages so please forgive my formatting, etc .... It's very intereting to me that you bring this up now, as I just convinced my SO to binge watch BTVS with me and we literally just watched this episode if the Kalderash clan sent Jenny to monitor Angel, wouldn't it be likely they've had people watching him since the day he was cursed? This had never occurred to me before or if it did, I must've fallen on the side of: they've always done it but now it is important [to show us] since Angel was falling in love and his pain was lessening, essentially agreeing with your scenario. For practical purposes, IIRC, Joss said (maybe in a commentary? we're streaming it so I do not have access to commentaries) that initially, Jenny was NOT introduced in S1 as a gypsy, but they loved Robia LaMorte so much that they decided to add her to the Kalderash Clan. Not a bad move, if that was the thinking.... That's a really good point. It would definitely be something that they could look into in a book, if they are still printing any. [FWIW, if I were on staff there, I would have hired you and loui_B452 long ago when IMDb was still up. I've actually used some of your theories to answer some of the typical BTVS questions a new viewer asks, so thanks!!!] Maybe you or someone else here can help me with this: Didn't the initial broadcast and/or the DVDs show Angel feeding at the end of Surprise? I'm streaming on Amazon (in the US) and it ended with him in pain in the alley. Am I misremembering this?

I'm streaming on Amazon (in the US) and it ended with him in pain in the alley. Am I misremembering this? It's been a couple of weeks now since re-watching that on Hulu, and I don't know if I saw that episode specifically in the "original" broadcast, though certainly in broadcast reruns. I want to say it always ended with him running outside, as more of a teaser that something was happening. Then the next episode picks up pretty much immediately where it left off leading into him feeding, and giving that sense of continuity between the two scenes. I think I've had that same sense of, "oh, is that where the episode is supposed to end?" but it's probably because the scenes between the two episodes are so seamless that you expect it to just keep going. And I do think that works better than if they'd shown all their cards in the preceding episode, showing him feeding on someone. It builds just the right amount of anticipation going into the next episode; especially when you haven't already seen what's going to happen next. Then you're left wondering if Angel's hurt, is something luring him outside; then the next episode makes it answer abundantly clear without drawing it out too long. I miss the discussions on IMDB; especially Lou's posts - he always seemed to find a way to spark a new type of discussion, no matter how often we tread the same material.
