James Cameron's Avatar was such a giant success because it revolutionized the theater experience with 3D.
To this day, no film has matched it's 3D experience. I saw it in 3D and no other film compares.
So people flocked for the experience.
James Cameron says his Avatar sequels are using a new 4D technology where you don't even need glasses. It's going to appear hyper realistic and even better than the 3D experience in 8K etc...
If he pulls this off, and the visual experience is like a real life experience, it doesn't matter how good the movie is or isn't. People will flock to see it and experience it. If it were just another sequel, no, it wouldn't match the success of the original. However, if he pulls off what he says he can pull off... Then he will match/surpass the original.
Why? Because people during this pandemic are abandoning the theaters for streaming. If it is timed just right, and released after people are sick or missing the theater experience, then are treated to this new 4K (without glasses). experience... Then it will EXPLODE.

That's interesting. I think though that the future of such technology is theme parks and museums, not movies because you don't move your head around when you watch a movie. I have a 3d mousepad and its kind of cool how it produces dimensional appearance while flat--but you have to move around to appreciate it. It also depends how complicated the technology is. If it takes way more apparatus to shoot a movie, then it will have limited application value.

I wonder what the fate of the Avatar sequels will be. Entirely dependent on how much the second movie makes.

December 17th 2021 I'm definitely rooting for the sequel(s) to be really good. I'm a huge James Cameron fan (loved the hell outta Avatar and saw it in IMAX 3D a number of times) and am optimistic that Avatar 2 will deliver the goods. Cameron has stated that he will have underwater sequences in Avatar 2. Sounds intriguing for sure.

It will likely require special projection technology to view the film as intended. Not all theatres may be equipped with this and there will be added expense involved. If this is the case, the film’s story and quality of script and acting will have to be up to scratch to compensate for this. I found the first one lacking in many areas in this department. Cameron is not the best script writer when it comes to dialog and Titanic will attest to this.
