I met the guy who restored the color scenes to Ben-Hur and the 1930 film Hells Angels. His name was Warren Rothenberger. Big-shot Hollywood cinemetographer or however you spell it, cameraman, DP, whatever. He told some very interesting stories. Interesting person as well. He said he was the cameraman for The Witches of Eastwick but had his name removed from the credits because he hated the film. He gave me some color stills from the films he restored which I still have.

When Knighthood Was in Flower (1922). When Knighthood Was in Flower is a tale about Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk, written by American author Charles Major, and which was given the usual historically inaccuarate and woeful Disney treatment in "The Sword and the Rose" in 1951 with a miscast Richard Todd playing the hero. I noted that two silent movies had been made of the novel. One in 1908 (no film copy exists) and in 1922, the one I recently watched. I've come to the conclusion that Brandon would be rotating in his grave on all counts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TREYY0bEDc8

A friend of mine had a wide cinema screen and a 16mm projector and I borrowed a print of the film from a public library. We watched it twice before I returned it. Long story. I borrowed several silent films from that library including The Kid and The Cat and the Canary.

San Francisco 1906: A Trip Down Market Street. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YRbMMqj0qwThis film was shot on April 14, 1906, just four days before the San Francisco earthquake and fire, to which the negative was nearly lost. The added sound is of course a modern mix. More info on the Youtube video.

Not of the classic silent era but an excellent, albeit unusual, movie starring Ray Milland. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R5kmVUAS9g
