I'm not a fan of Sellers' performance and haven't seen Pacino's (have heard mostly negative things about it) but otherwise it's a strong set.
For me, the best group ever was, perhaps, 1962 - Lancaster, Lemmon, Mastroianni, O'Toole, Peck
My picks for 1979:
1. Ben Gazzara, Saint Jack 2. Roy Scheider, All That Jazz 3. Dustin Hoffman, Kramer vs. Kramer 4. Jeff Bridges, Winter Kills 5. David Bennent, The Tin Drum
