Jesus, never mind Covid 19, this new allotment is enough to give me a heart attack. I spent three hours yesterday cutting out a 10 square yard bed. I am not keen on hard graft at the best of times, but I did my bit. And the ground was so hard that I bent the bloody fork.
So far I have cut away a few inches of rock hard top soil, put in three rows of Vivaldi 2nd earlies, chucked a few barrowloads of woodchip on top and tomorrow, assuming that my knees and back are working again, I will haul the top soil back on top again. It is a pity all the garden centres have closed because I like to throw in a packet or two of Bulbs Anonymous into the vegetable beds, but I dare say that will have to wait a bit.
I like rachelcarson's idea of using goats to keep the grass down. I remember reading about a German lass who did something similar with sheep. Apparently she rented flocks of them to the local authorities to keep the grass down in the local parks.
