...According to cast member Dan Fogler. Okay so if that was such a big deal like everything else in the FB film series so far, how come no one made a reference to it in the Harry Potter movies? It'd be like if when Luke mentioned the Clone Wars in A New Hope, Kenobi had no idea what he was referring to.

The Global Wizarding War? Yeah, that's a pretty big deal in this universe (the last major conflict before Voldemort rises), and that's what these movies have always been leading up to. That and the final duel between Grindelwald and Dumbledore - which is supposed to epic, but...we'll see.
Though I still don't know what Newt's role in all of this is supposed to be...
Anyway, they do a piss-poor job of explaining Grindelwald in the HP movies and that's one of their many pitfalls. At the time it made sense, I guess - for the purposes of Harry's story what you see of Grindelwald is all you needed to know. You're right though, the execution of all this has been terrible for the many people that didn't read the books. And even for those of us who have it's still fairly convoluted.
But the war is definitely mentioned in the main HP book series and in the supplementary materials. Not a lot of detail is given, they're mostly just passing references, but yeah...
