The new Ulcerate album leaked. Listening now. My first Ulcerate album (I think).
Edit: Excellent album. Very complex but very enjoyable. Definitely gonna get the CD. I’m sure you’ll love it.

I'll be listening tonight if that's the case. If you haven't heard Everything is Fire, get it now! That's probably my favorite metal album of the 2000s and was probably when they had their best combination of apocalyptic atmosphere with consistently killer riffs.

Charli XCX released a new single off an upcoming quarantine album:
Not really digging this, tbh. Love the intro but everything else is pretty meh and cookie cutter.

Listened to the new Ulcerate album twice yesterday. It's definitely a change for them. I agree with those saying it's their most accessible (only relative to their standards, though; it's not like they've gone Metallica Black Album-level of accessibility). Some have said it's because now they're using more melody, but I don't think I agree with that. It's not so much melody as it is harmony. Ulcerate have always been highly focused on the force of sound they can create through violent, dissonant maelstroms. Stare Into Death... frequently breaks out of that "dissonant maelstrom" mode with numerous sequences in which there's discernible harmonic progressions. So the album is as richly textured as all Ulcerate is, it's just now more tonally colorful.
In retrospect, I think this change was already starting to happen on Shrines of Paralysis. From Everything is Fire to Vermis, Ulcerate seemed like the heralds and purveyors of the apocalypse, so their dissonant sonic assaults seemed the correlative to the destruction they were writing about. Shrines of Paralysis, and now Stare Into Death... even more so, is more like dealing with the aftermath of all that. So the introduction of discernible harmonic progression has the greatest impact on the tone the album takes on; less reveling in the destruction and more into exploring the feelings and emotions of what happens when you've (as the title of a Shrines song goes) "ended the hope."
It's an interesting change, one I hope they continue to explore on future albums. As awesome as Everything is Fire and Destroyers of All were, I think they took that sound as far as they can go. This is evidenced by how Vermis was their first album to just sound like a retread. Exploring more of the tonal options possible in their post-metal influences (they've always had a bit of a Neurosis/Isis vibe to them, but now, I think, they're starting to sound more like Cult of Luna, which is a step up IMO) seems the best way forward. Not sure yet where I rank the album in their discography, but it's hovering between an 8-9/10. If you asked me now I'd probably put it below Fire and Shrines, about even with Destroyers, and above Vermis and their debut.
EDIT: One more thing about the album; I already knew Jamie Saint Merat was probably the greatest metal drummer of this century, but this album really made me appreciate him on another level. So many times on this album there will be a single riff that Merat will play like 4 or 5 different beats to and it completely changes the tempo and feel of the music. One YouTube commentator got it right about him: most bands have a lead guitarist, Ulcerate have a lead drummer. What he does is so much more than just lay down the rhythm, his drumming is like a whole other layered texture to the music, and it's amazing to hear how much variations he's able to find within a single riff or section.

Somehow it escaped me that Katatonia has a new album coming soon. They've released a couple of singles:
^ This song shocked me. The opening instrumental sounds nothing like Katatonia. Never would've guessed it was them until the vocals kick in, and even then I think I would've wondered if it was just some other band with a singer that sounded like Renske. Still, I'm digging it. Has an almost 90s-alternative meets 80s-rock vibe to it.
^ This, however, sounds more like modern Katatonia. Maybe a bit more low-key and with more obvious electronic touches, but still very much their brand of beautiful melancholia.

OK, listened to the new Katatonia. Definitely their most "rock/guitar-riff" oriented album since Last Fair Deal and Viva Emptiness, but also definitely melded with their latter-day style of heavily textured and nuanced gothic-melancholic soundscapes. On paper it sounds like a great combination, especially since I love both aspects of the band, but I can't help but feel the hybrid isn't as good as either their alternative rock era (especially Last Fair Deal, which remains my favorite from them) or their newer "gothic" era. Of course, Katatonia tends to get better with repeat listens, so I may end up changing my mind. As of now I think it's probably their weakest album since The Great Cold Distance, but many people loved that one too so it's just one man's opinion.

Best way to find/hear premieres on YT is to subscribe to the channels of your favorite bands/artists. On the left side of YT's page is your list of subscriptions and when any of them releases a new video there will be a dot next to it. If it's a channel you often visit the YT algorithm will typically recommend the video automatically on the main page as well. I did that for a couple of artists and today the first notification came through. It's 'Bad Seed TeeVee', a 24 hour live feed of all things Nick Cave - videos, interviews and such. Just shown a cracking live cut of Jubilee Street.

Hayley Williams (from Paramore) just released her first solo studio album. Haven't heard it yet, and haven't been super-impressed with the singles. Had a definite Radiohead vibe to it:
