...but had to ask someone who it was? Some years ago I was on lunch from work outside Hyde Park. There were (and probably still are) a row of five old fashioned red telephone kiosks on the pavement of Park Lane just by a stretch of the railings, quite near to the Speaker's Corner area. As I was walking past on this day I noticed a well-suited man posing by the kiosks obviously for a photo shoot because he was being photographed in a number of poses. I had no clue but out of curiosity I approached someone close at hand who was clearly connected with the subject. I went over to him and just said : "Excuse me, who is he?" as I nodded over at the kiosks. The fellow replied in probably a French accent and was most amiable to my inquiry. "It's Jean-Michel Jarre," he said. "Ah, really?" I sort of exclaimed with genuine pleasure but to be honest no real sense of excitement, I have to say. I wouldn't have recognized him from Adam otherwise, but looked over at him again thinking "That's Jean Michel-Jarre, that is." But my exchange with his assistant wasn't over yet. He said in a most humble fashion "And thank you for asking." I'm thinking like, whoa, I didn't know too much at all about Jarre but I knew enough to know the guy had sold millions of records at the time and sold out huge venues, and here's me being thanked for asking who he was. Name of god, that was a surreal lunch break. A pic of the phone boxes on Park Lane, but I'm damned if I can find a pic with J-MJ by them. I'm guessing the photos they took weren't used.

I didn't have to ask, but it took me 20 minutes to figure out I was sitting next to Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead on a plane. He was in a suit, no glasses, no tie dye, no bass. He was looking at me, must have seen the recognition come over my face and he laughed and said "I knew you would get it." Nice guy.
