Sorry, Purple Rain lovers. The more lesser known numbers the better as far as I'm concerned, yes sir, and that was a rip-roarer. And I always liked his version of One Of Us, and good to see No Call U get a look in too. There's only one Q song (save for something called 'Q In Doubt' which apparently isn't even its rightful name and appears as Do Your Dance on the Cream EP single. I don't know what 'Q In Doubt' is/was/means but answer on a postcard if you know its history. In the meantime, it's the sensational sound of The Question Of U (live but faithful to the original) Sit back and enjoy it as he switches from piano to lead guitar in one sweeping movement, and I don't know about anyone else but I can't think of a single performer I've seen who could pull off this sh*t with such aplomb and finesse :

In all of popular music history, perhaps no album was shrouded in more mystery than Prince's Black Album, in large part because after its initial limited release Prince pulled the album. Supposedly he had a religious epiphany that the album was evil. So the hype built for 7 years before its official release. In '94 that official release happened, and it turned out to be more pure funk than pure evil. Though if tracks like Rockhard in a Funky Place are evil, you can drag me to hell now:

Though if tracks like Rock Hard in a Funky Place are evil, you can drag me to hell now: Thanks for not going with Raspberry Beret. I was going to post The Ride just to preclude it, but I didn't want to be rude. It's almost 11 minutes anyway so I doubt anyone would have listened to it.

I love Raspberry Beret too (I love Prince's take on psychedelic pop in general, especially on Parade), but I like that this thread is geared more towards Prince's hidden gems, because there's about a bazillion of them. He's one of those artists who's difficult to fully appreciate given the immensity and diversity of his catalog, so I always appreciate the opportunity to introduce people to songs outside the hits.

For S, I'll go with my favorite song off Diamonds and Pearls, "Strollin'". There are not many songs in Prince's discography that I can really compare it to, and it never fails to put me in a good mood.

"Thunder"
Probably my favorite song off an album I didn't enjoy much.

Here's an unreleased 'one-take live-in-studio' track. The Undertaker.

VNot bad, not bad at all. Sound like a contender for Dirty Mind but I'm alright with just the eight songs on it. Eva Yojimbo you're up.

It's widely accepted that Prince was a musical genius, a composer and performer of many albums that are considered masterpieces and songs considered among the greatest ever written. Yet, the Prince song I enjoy the most isn't one of his masterpieces, or one of the "greatest songs ever written." It is, however, a song I can put on any day, anytime, in any mood, and instantly feel better. It simply has one of my favorite Prince hooks with its bouncy verse riff that leads into one of his catchiest chorus. Tonally, it has a wonderful bittersweetness in how the effervescence of the music contrasts with sad, heartbroken lyrics; a combination that fewer songs and fewer artists have ever done better than here. Finally, as if that wasn't enough, it also has my favorite Prince guitar solo of any of his studio songs.

Not a ton of choices for Z, but thankfully, this cut from Chaos & Disorder is one of Prince's rockinest tunes:
