LA TRINCHERA INFINITA (THE ENDLESS TRENCH), which shows a man named Higinio Blanco having to hide inside his house for 30 years, shows on-screen texts with word definitions right out of the dictionary. At first I thought they were supposed to mark the beginning of a new chapter, but they became more and more frequent. Most of the words aren't that obscure. Hell, a couple of them are used on a day-to-day basis! Was that on purpose? Some kind of self-aware usage? Either way, it's a bad idea to add unnecessary moments (even if they last 2 seconds) to an already overlong and repetitive plot. Belén Cuesta's performance is good, but Javier Agirre's cinematography is very bad. There are some intense and/or touching moments, but also instances of wasted potential. For example, when Rosa (Higinio's wife) is talking to a customer who tries to forcefully kiss her. She manages to stop him and kicks him out. She then starts saying "What a coward! So shameful!" to herself. I thought "This is very complex, because the audience doesn't know if she's talking about the customer or Higinio, who knew what was going on, but couldn't come out and help her." Less than a minute later, she reveals that she was referring to Higinio. 4/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
