Peter Cushing in horror. Dr. Frankenstein, bad. Van Helsing, vampire hunter, good. Also, bad guy kind of iconic in Star Wars. Notably, also, Henry Fonda, but someone below named his lesser known villain, one that no one outside IMDB knows the name of. Hero: Juror #8 Villain: Col. Thursday (pseudo for Custer) in Fort Apache. Jack Nicholson may be under consideration in multiple roles. I'm not sure the characters he played are considered iconic, since very few are household "names". Same for Bogie, Cagney, E.G., Kirk, and most others, so I'm figuring you want "iconic names" that are "household names", or else the list would be gigantic. For Henry Fonda he also played the child murderer in Once Upon... West. He wanted to wear colored contacts to hide his blue eyes and Leone turned down that request. Jack was the first movie Joker. And he was the protagonist or villain to the system in Cuckoo. As for good guys? I dunno.

Jean Claude Van Dam for both in The Replicant also same for playing Luc Deveraux in the Universal Soldier franchise, also for playing Colonel William F. Guile in Street Fighter, now that's ICONIC!! Jack Nicholson for being Jack Nicholson and playing both The Joker + Jack Torrence. Mel Gibson for being Mel Gibson and playing William Wallace and Martin Riggs Michael Rosenbaum for being Lex Luthor and The Flash.

Cushing also played Sherlock Holmes in the Hammer version of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' and The Doctor in two successful Doctor Who movies. Pretty iconic, at least to UK citizens who lived through the mid-60's.

Yul Brynner -- the heroic leader of The Magnificent Seven, and also unforgettable as the primary villain in both The Ten Commandments and Westworld.
