I've had an Xbox twice in my life and I never really played it much except for Madden and a couple minor games.
I'm not really into shoot em up role playing games. i'm not even sure I'll spend that much time on it but what games do you suggest?
I also used to play Sonic, so that's about my speed. Probably not going to go for stuff like Fortnight.
Suggestions?

I'm not much of a gamer, but the Spiderman game that came out in 2018 (I think) is incredible. It's not particularly difficult but it's a ton of fun.
Red Dead Redemption II is the best game I've ever played. While Spiderman may be more "fun," Red Dead is about as immersive a gaming experience as one could ask for and the details in it are extraordinary.

If you’re looking for something arcade-ish like Sonic maybe a Switch would be more your taste.

Wow, a PlayStation huh? Really retro choice. I’d recommend Metal Gear Solid, any Final Fantasy from VI to IX, the Spyro the Dragon trilogy and Crash Bandicoot trilogy (those trilogies are kids games really but we’re talking about a console that’s almost 30 years old so who cares), Resident Evil 2, Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, Tomb Raider 2, Silent Hill, and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2. Really glad to see someone interested in the vintage consoles, have fun!

I'd like to second Red Dead Redemption 2. Its the best story I've ever played.
GTA 5 is a fun story as well.
The Uncharted Collection is good too. It has Uncharted 1, 2, and 3. If you like those Uncharted 4 is available too.

If you’re only gonna be on the PS every now and then maybe those Rock Star games aren’t for you. GTA and RDR take like at least a hundred hours each to fully play and complete.

Frogger was a fun one that I use to play on Atari before I had pubic hair. Do they still have that?

The new Resident Evil games have been great; 7 and the remake of 2. I’m playing the remake of 3 right now.

Not sure how that's vintage.

Lately I've replayed the Far Cry games from 3-5. They're all fun. Fall out 4 is fun and has a sports tie-in as one of the key locations in the game is Fenway Park.
Just Cause 3 is one of the most fun ones if you're mainly looking to shoot bad guys and blow shit up with limited story missions. Watch Dogs 2 is a lot of fun. Good story and you can choose between sneaking and a shoot 'em up on missions.
Ghost Recon Wildlands is good if you're creative. It can be the same 3 missions over and over again but if you use the terrain, get a good weapons arsenal there's enough natural variation to have fun the whole way. Also one of the few games where co-op actually enhances the game play.

No one is gonna suggest MLB The Show?
I haven't finished the Spider-Man game, seems OK, but I preferred the Arkham games Sobotka mentioned.

I havent had a system in many years, but I loved that Spider-man 2 game for the original XBox.. you'd just explore New York city via web slinging and it was awesome. I can only imagine how much better the new version is.

As people have said above, the Spider-Man game was great. He's such a fun character to control in an open world style game. Just web slinging around the city can be fun and relaxing.
The Uncharted games are good to solid. The first 3 are good and 4/Lost Legacy were meh or okay imo. But they are shooting games so not sure if you're into them based on your OP or if shoot em up games are more Call of Duty types. So I'll leave it in here just in case.
Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human are interesting games if you're into a cinema style presentation and a good story over gameplay.
Stardew Valley is a great game however not for everybody. It'll sound boring but it can be really addicting and a great stress reliever imo.
Heard the new God of War was great as well but I never got into it. Same with The Witcher 3. Witcher 3 is more RPG based though.
Until Dawn was a fun horror/story based game if you're into that.
MLB The Show's are all great. This years Madden is awesome if you want to get back into it.
I can't think of any new platformers like a Sonic that are on PlayStation.
Some may suggestion The Last of Us to you but don't listen to them. That game is garbage outside of visuals and voice acting and that's a hill I will die on.

I loved RDR1 and was excited for RDD2 got it on launch downloaded it (which takes for fucking ever since the game is so big) and never not once did I play it. Listen to a gaming podcast and they said it's a slow game to really get into and it's so large that I just never felt in the mood to commit to it. Always found something else to play instead.

The last 2 Tomb Raider games were pretty great too but they're like the Uncharted games so if that shooting based combat style gameplay isn't for you than I'd skip it as well.
