This narrow hand-spun rope bridge spans the snow melt rapids of the The Enguri river Georgia. It took some coaxing to bring these two donkeys across ! in Соль Сванетии , Salt for Svanetia (1930) Soviet Union Dir. Mikhail Kalatozov. A fascinating ethnographic film which documents the life of the Svan people in the isolated mountain village of Ushguli in Svanetia, in the north-western part of the Georgian Soviet Republic. Filmed with much creative style, every scene illuminated with strikingly beautiful compositions, the breathtaking scenic setting features the historical village of Ushguli , now recognized as the Upper Svaneti UNESCO World Heritage Site... Highly Recommended.

Unter den Brücken , Under the Bridges (1946) German Dir. Helmut Käutner starring Hannelore Schroth as Anna Altmann Carl Raddatz as Hendrik Feldkamp and Gustav Knuth as Willy Filmed in 1944 but not released until 1946 Käutner's film is regarded as one the most important in Classic German Cinema. It is a wonderfully entertaining film with no hint of war or politics, the film is beautifully composed poetic realism, portraying touchingly the everyday lives and romances of two Havel River barge boatmen who have befriended a lonely bridge wandering girl. Glorious cinematography captures the barge passing under many bridges with views to the pretty passers by above. Among the many featured bridges crossing the busy waterway is Glienicke Bridge.
During the Cold War, as this portion of the Havel River formed the border between West Berlin and East Germany, the bridge was used several times for the exchange of captured spies and thus became known as the Bridge of Spies.

Oh, this looks like winner, planet. Don't know how you come to see so many of these cinematic heirlooms, but I'm grateful that you do and that you share them here. I love ethnographic films in general, and this looks like a must-see. Thank you so much for the introduction. The image above is simple haunting!
Hi there spiderwort thanks as always for sharing your interest. It looks like the fabulous box set, I got mine some years back from the USA "Landmarks of Early Soviet Film" from fliker is now unavailable or it is now incredibly expensive, however I think Salt for Svanetia may currently be on youtube. This early film of Mikhail Kalatozov is certainly a winner, I have a great interest in classic cinema from around the world, in social history and love to learn and discover new places, language and different cultures, I track down and order my films after much research from far off places, an order placed last night includes Chinese, Soviet, German, and Iranian films there is so much quality classic film still to uncover.... PS Thanks also for all the other encouraging pos. feedback thumbs up.... Happy Salt for Svanetia Classic Viewing to you...

Die Letzte Brücke , The Last Bridge (1954) Austrian Yugoslavian co-production. Dir. Helmet Käutner. An exceptional film. Set and filmed on location in Yugoslavia, opening the film is the Mostar Bridge and a scene of a dramatic attempted escape into the Neretva river below. Bridges feature significantly throughout and in a striking and symbolic finale, one of those great unforgettable cinematic closing images, a somber, anti-war message is composed on the “last bridge”... Featured throughout the film The Killing of Angel Street (1981) and integral to the story an iconic Australian landmark the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The excellent Australian thriller film is based on the real life events that surrounded the fight by activists in the 1970s in Sydney's Kings Cross district to save their Victorian-era terrace housing from destruction by developers, keen to exploit the harbour and bridge views for up-market real estate. The campaign resulted in murders and the high profile disappearance of green activist, heiress and local newspaper publisher Juanita Nielsen, whose body was never found. Those who authorised her murder have never been held accountable. Interesting to note that the NSW state just recently offered a hefty reward in the fading hope of receiving any information... The famous arch bridge opened in 1932, a magnificent scene across the harbour, from the shores where homes and peoples rights are threatened by developers...
