My childhood faith is long gone. I was an atheist during my college years, but I wouldn't call myself an atheist now. I don't really know which category I'd fall into. Basically, I see Divinity in all things, and I view life as a journey of growth. The purpose of life is simply to learn, to gain wisdom from experience, and to mature the soul. It can be a beautiful adventure as long as we find a lesson in everything, in every joy and every challenge. People always seem to find the most contentment and satisfaction when they feel like they're growing as individuals. When we cease to grow, then we stagnate and lose our sense of purpose, and then depression creeps in. I think that's why depression is epidemic in the western cultures.

Not to mention all the countless sects within religions Ah yes. Most world religions are divided into numerous denominations, sects, cults, schools, etc., but, it is only the divisions within Christianity that gets emphasized.

"I don't really know which category I'd fall into." Do you believe in any god in particular? No? Well then you're an atheist, there that was easy.

I dunno about that, I often hear about the divisions within the other Abrahamic religions (Shi'ite, Sunni, Hassidics,). In fact a lot of tension within the Middle East seems to do with tension between Shi'ites and Sunnis.

Do you find that to be true as you sit in a predominantly Christian country, consuming media from a country that is predominantly Christian and interacting with people that are in countries that are predominantly Christian (or at least where Christianity is the largest religion)? I wonder if any of those may influence why most of the talk of religion you hear tends to focus on Christianity? Do you think the same would be true if you'd be born into a Muslim family in Pakistan?

In many countries in Asia, where they try to control the religions, Christians are officially divided into 'Catholic & Protestant' as opposed to 'Christian.' By contrast, all the other religions, are: Buddhist, Muslim, Taoist, Confucianist, Shinto, etc. They are not: 'Mahayana & Theravada; Sunni & Shia, etc.

Not to mention all the countless sects within religions
Sects, sects, sects; Is that all you ever think about? Yes and i think there is between 30 and 40.000 sects in Christianity alone. Of course i have no idea if that number is correct but its the numbers i have heard. It's probably closer to forty million. Everybody cherry-picks the Bible and no two people "interpret" it the same way. Some believe that oral sex during marriage is a sin; others do not. Some believe that you must attend church at Christmas and Easter, others have different standards for absenteeism. Some believe mass should still be in Latin, while others believe pedophiles should get the death penalty.
Do you know anyone who takes their unruly child to the edge of town so that they can be stoned? Do you cook your bread with cattle manure as directed by Jehovah in Ezekiel 4:15 or do you use a gas oven like I do? I find it astonishing at the number of people who believe only they have the correct interpretation of the bible and Yahweh will only reward those that follow ME,
