Paramount Pictures named him Cary Grant when he began his film career, because of the similarity of the name to Gary Cooper, their biggest male star (C.G. being an inversion of G.C.) and possibly because Clark Gable had the same initials.
another version is on Gary's page
In the early 1930s his doctor told him he had been working too hard. Cooper went to Europe and stayed a lot longer than planned. When he returned, he was told there was now a "new" Gary Cooper--an unknown actor needed a better name for films, so the studio had reversed Gary Cooper's initials and created a name that sounded similar: Cary Grant.
Truth ? .... ?

Tain't the way I heered it. do tell ... The version I've always known is that Grant and his studio agreed that Archie Leach was no name for a leading man. He suggested "Cary Lockwood", which was the name of a character he had once played on the stage. The studio liked "Cary" but wanted a shorter surname. He, along with another man (someone from the studio, or his agent, I'm not sure), went over a long list of surnames provided by the studio. And when they came to "Grant", they both liked the sound of "Cary Grant". And that was that.
