A lot of the older shows I never saw except in syndication.
With a lot of the older shows they would have a little 30 second or one minute scene before the ending credits. When shows started syndicating I remember channels like TBS would just completely cut off the last scene.
It was an easy way to edit. From time to time I still see endings that I've never seen before on classic shows.
I've seen every episode of The Andy Griffith Show over 20 times each. The other day I watched an episode and saw an ending that I had never seen before after all these years. Problem is it cut out parts of two other scenes in the middle of the show.
It always seems they're cutting out some of my favorite bits.
Does anybody else ever see scenes that they haven't seen before?

Does anybody else ever see scenes that they haven't seen before? Not recently. But when I bought the DVDs of Star Trek: The Original Series, I discovered just how much had been cut out for syndication. In particular, I remember a scene from the beginning of "Space Speed" with Kirk and Spock discussing how they found the Botany Bay. The syndicated version opens with Kirk saying, "There it is" as the Botany Bay appears on the viewscreen.

Many times in the Andy Griffith Show, they cut out the tag at the end. It is a shame.

On a lot of the cable channels now they cut out the end credits and just put them in tiny miniature at the bottom of the screen during the final scene of the episode. But the end credits were actually a great part of the show for some of those old classics like Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Especially when you recognize somebody and want to see who the actor was. It's impossible to see it. I've also seen the credits that zip by in 10 seconds. Always makes me think I accidentally pushed the fast forward button!

That example was memorable to me because it was a larger cut than usual. Most syndicated Star Trek episodes have a number of small cuts, but in "Space Seed" they lopped off the first half the teaser.

Some shows are edited at different places on the same episode on different channels. Is it because there are that many copies of the show out there that are already edited or do the stations themselves do all the editing?

In the case of Star Trek there was a syndication package with standard cuts. The syndication cuts were detailed by Phil Farrand in his book The Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers.
