WWII sub film pitting an American sub against the Japanese, some of the sub footage they use is amazing, but it suffers a bit because the battles use obvious models and taints the illusion, the cast is very good, especially Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, varies quite a bit from the excellent Leach novel, I had heard this movie inspired the Star Trek TOS episode Balance of Terror and there are some very similar elements. 8/10

I couldn't get over the violence it did to the story of the novel it's based on (which was one of my absolute favorites books as a young man), but I wouldn't mind revisiting it someday to see if I could enjoy it on its own merits.
